Christmas party etiquette

christmas.jpg With the festive season upon us, no doubt that you will be heading off to the odd Christmas party.

This is a great time of year where you get to mix and mingle at parties with friends, acquaintances, and work colleagues.

It is also a fantastic opportunity to get outside your normal social networks and have some fun.

With this in mind RSVP decided to get our relationship expert John Aiken into the studio to give us some guidelines on how to stay merry during the holiday period.

If you can't view the below embedded video, you can watch the video on our YouTube channel here:Christmas Party Etiquette

Enjoy the festive season!

Laughs at you....

You know there is nothing nicer than holding a baby close and snuggling with it..sighh... You know if I was younger and could, I would have another baby... As it is..being a grandmother kind of takes care of that clucky feeling..Can hold them..cuddle them, care for them, baby sit them and then hand them back lol!

I now have my eggnog and all I need is the brandy or rum to go with it...hehehe...can't wait.

Vodka is my drink of choice! Especially dry martinis, shaken not stirred of course. Vodka any which way is ok with me. Not a big drinker, but do like a couple here and there. When I make a martini at home, I use a large cocktail glass, lol, so I don't have to get up and make another one! That's about my limit, 4 drinks, and I'm walking on the clouds for hours! And absolutely no hangover. I'm a very large martini screemer! Recipe: Lots of vodka, and a splash of extra dry vermouth. Put in shaker with ice and shake till chilled. Hint: just fill the glass up with vodka and add a splash of the other stuff. Don't worry about measuring. The bigger the glass the better it tastes!

One very clear piece of advice I would give is.."Please do not drink more than the appropriate amount of alcohol if you intend to drive home after the party"

I remember very sadly one works party my husband and I went to, picking up a fellow worker of my husband's along the way. My husband only ever had 1 drink the most 2 and was the designated driver. Much much later when we were ready to leave the fellow worker did not wish to leave and said he had another lift. We heard the next day that there had been a smash and this man had been killed as a result! We felt bad about it for some time but we could not force him to leave with us and as we had a babysitter we had to leave at that particular time..sighhhhh. The driver was absolutely smashed apparently therefore was in no condition to drive. It's just not worth it! It gets crazy at times at Christmas so everything in moderation folks!..

Apparently, its where vodka comes from

potato and grain

lol

Caw I have been to a few parties this week and absolutely nackered from all the late nights.

Must be the weather... But it might be from too much jiggitty-jigging - dancing or maybe its a combo

hahaha

Posted by: ooouniqueooo at December 12, 2011 1:25 PM

Well I have been to a few works Christmas dinner parties.

Once as the "Designated driver: so no drinking for me.

Listening to all the suckups to the bosses, stupid jokes etc etc - I was ready to murder the fools.

One really needs to be in the same state to enjoy.

But it's best not to remove any clothing, and maybe Mobile Phones should be banned, lest your posted for all the world to see in all your (career limiting) idiocy on Youtube the next day.

Hahahaha

I looked at these words that John used and had to laugh as I tend to see things more differently than others at times....

"With the festive season upon us, no doubt that you will be heading off to the odd Christmas party"

As I read the words I was wondering..just how many of you have actually been to an "odd" christmas party lol

Hi, ooouniqueooo'
You mean you aren't much into bonking precipitated by the 'Mal-fluence of ink-ahol'? Me neither. I LIKE to be able to remember the event - especially after it's finished and I'm working on the encore. Helps to keep me focussed. Helps to reduce 'brewer's droop' too.

Lady, re the first sentence above, your stocks just went up a few more percentage points as they say in the financial reports.

It's raining here today but I am still in a 'drought area' - - - 30 years in October - - - and I think have had some VERY interesting experiences and learned some wonderful lessons that I doubt would have come my way if I had been showing a BAL of 0.25% or similar.

Did LLTD explain the 'potato juice' to you?

You have a wonderful day.
Best wishes.

Mal

hahaha love it!!!

That's some real talk however I don't think its possible when under the influence

drinkers who drink to get drunk before they enjoy themselves turn me off. I don't attend many work functions for this reason.

Id rather pick up sober and be picked up by someone sober

Margie284... Absolutely agree !! Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt..

Posted by: towhomitmayconcern52 at December 3, 2011 12:27 PM ..."it's fun 'pretending to work' while keeping your ears open to the gossipers.." but more importantly..."Basically though if you didn't see it with your own eyes or hear it in person it's probably embellished or not true at all". I find this a good philosophy to follow in life, in general.

Christmas parties

Work - scandalous yet accepted

*shakes head*

All makes for interesting observation and video footage hahaha

Family - hmmm bit boring now that kid children are adults. I'd rather be on a singles cruise lol

Friends backyard barbecues - always enjoyable with no kids around. Relaxing

I don't drink but its always fun listening to other people ramble on lol. The truth of how people feel seems to come out when they've got a few in 'em

Work Christmas parties, what are they???

Posted by: wallstreet3 at December 3, 2011 6:59 PM

Work christmas gatherings ?
I think the saying is never fish off the company wharf.
Even if its bring a friend and you end up chatting to someone that isn't a co- worker it is still too close for comfort.
I shall just remain in my own loop and let my hair down within my own group away from work..
Work christmas parties are great venues for people watching.
What happens at the christmas party stays at the christmas party ? Me thinks not ! There is always a post mortem at work even if you don't take part in anything untoward but it's fun 'pretending to work' while keeping your ears open to the gossipers.. Basically though if you didn't see it with your own eyes or hear it in person it's probably embellished or not true at all..

Loved your reminiscing hahaha Made me giggle first thing when I signed in lol!

Not much of a drinker these days although I do enjoy a glass of red from time to time or a southern comfort and diet coke..I giggle even more when I indulge so certainly don't need it to have a good time but just depends on circumstances and whether I am in the mood for a drink or not.

I think some of the tips given on this topic apply to any social function, not particularly Christmas..smiles...In my opinion it's best not to get too attached to fellow workers..Always ends up being too complicated and ends up on the gossip mill.

Yes Magnet - definitely not my finest moment. And while the bud-lights in the tree (and the small spotlight on the ground pointing upwards) were very pretty - they did tend to make things a tad more noticeable as well :)

Posted by: peacefulsixty at December 2, 2011 10:20 PM

I'd already learned: at 20. 21,22, 23 and 28.
This just reinforced it.
Especially after I painfully discovered just how much longer it takes to 'recover' when you are 20 years older :)

Some years ago, I visited a business in South Melbourne on Christmas Eve . I needed to collect some documents but had a lot of trouble finding anyone who ws sober enough to listen. I finally got the right person and he was as drunk as everyone else. He was standing behind his desk and swaying from side to side. On impluse, I began to sway in the opposite direction. It proved to be a very bad idea. His eyes suddenly bulged, he gripped the edge of his desk and projectile vomited. I copped most of it! I suppose it served me right!

Hi, MsMagnet11.
Me????????
Sanctimonious???????? I hope not. As I said, I don't judge those who do choose to drink. My decision to no longer consume alcholic beverages is just that, MY decision. I have never thought or intended that it should be anybody else's decision, choice or detiny. Nor am I member of any temperance group. No, Ma/am. Just think how many people would be out of work if EVERYBODY stopped taking alcoholic drinks.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day.
Best wishes.

Yes, hence the wording "never again"...that's why I put that. I very rarely drink now and especially not when I am out. But you do sound a bit sanctimonious Peaceful, maybe like a smoker that has given up??? I no longer drink like that but understand that sometimes it happens.

Hi, Folks.
I have a question about this topic. This question jumped out at me as soon as I read the title, BEFORE I had read the post OR seen the video. Maybe I'm a little simple but can ANYBODY please explain to me why Christmas party etiquette should be any different from any other time of the year or any other party?

I have been on the wagon since October, 1981 but I don't judge others for having a few drinks. If I think they have had too many and are out of control, I will absent myself from their presence. I do tend to help those who are in trouble, even though it be self-inflicted but I will walk away from those who are being noisy, obnoxious or a nuisance.

Try as I might, I can't come to grips with a mindset that thinks you have to write yourself off to have a good time. What's more, I'll bet that I enjoy life way more than most of those who get plastered in the name of having a good time. AND, I can remember all of it.

There was a saying that came out of the hippie/flower power era: "Reality is only for people who can't handle drugs." Well, I have to admit that I am addicted to one particular 'drug'. I am as high as a kite on life. Just LOVE it. I GOTTA have some EVERY day.

Hi, Amber and Msmagnet.
Didjya learn from your respective experiences???????

You all have a wonderful day.
Best wishes.

Amber you are a crackup. We all tend to lash out like that when newly single, just a pity it was in such a public way with the EO too!!!
Mine was at a BBQ that a friend had after school on a Fri and I got absolutely plastered and had to be driven home, the door opened for me, somehow got the little one to bed and snoozed in the chair till 11pm when I was sober enough to make it to bed......never again...lol. Don't get to many Christmas functions these days. having said that have a get together Tuesday that I am really looking forward too.

Haven't watched the video - but I can tell you what you DON'T do:

First Christmas after I split with my ex I went along to my work Christmas Party.
Had a great time - well for the majority of the night - but drank way too much!
I am not a regular drinker anyway - so it hit me much more than I realised or expected.

Ended up out doors sitting on the grass illuminated by a lovely bud-light lit tree - vomiting into a bucket which some sweet young man - around the same age as my son - had found for me.

Home on the bus - with my head down - bucket under my chin - I am sure it wasn't pleasant for anyone.
And that just happened to be the first year we'd had our Heath Service's EO come along with us!

I am only forever grateful I didn't start crying as well! (I think I was way too drunk to cry)
Not very dignified for a 47 year old woman - and my daughter who was still up and helped one of my work-mates get me into the house from the bus - has never let me forget it :)

And PS. I suffered - my head felt like it was too heavy for my neck - for 3 days afterwards :)

Greetings John,
Valid and timely points in your video. Noice.

One question comes to mind, "Why is it so, only at this time of the year?

Being of European heritage, I'm amazed at the differences in demeanour, between our gents and overseas. I presume that being PC has a lot to do with it, esp., in the workplace. It seems Euro gents have flirtatiousness, 24/7, indoctrinated in kindy.

My experience has been that some local guys are suffering flirt fatigue during the week, too busy to bother recognising a feline.

Festive season is the highlight for this social butterfly - an excellent opportunity to mingle and have a good time with people who are more open and communicative.

Looking forward to it , you never know who you will meet (Santa, you listenin?)

Have bright smile and new LBD (little black dress), will travel.
