Smart phones will account for 23 per cent of all new handsets sold by 2013, according to a recent research study by Juniper Research. And within the first 5 months of its launch, iPhone users downloaded around 300 million applications.
Have you downloaded any iPhone applications lately? If you could design an iPhone application for RSVP, what features would you include?

my iPhone is my girlfriend now unless someone's jealous :P

I now have an iPhone. Appsniper is a useful app for getting apps very cheaply ... and for games, check out Angry Birds. I still use my iPod for audiobooks, music and podcasts rather than the iPhone, and my Palm T|X for ebooks and calendar. (In spite of the technology, I still like to have a little moleskin notebook handy!)
:-D

RSVP iPhone app sounds good to me!

Yes I agree, I hardly use my laptop as much anymore, the iPhone is so portable its almost like a phone sized laptop...I love it !! The Dalai Lama definately has a point though.. in the end where will all this gadgetery actually get us?
Posted by: thewatergirl at March 13, 2010 9:45 AM
We are a two iphone family and the worse thing about it is the graveyard it causes of all the other gizmos and gadgets that have now been given away or put away for some reason or another.
The TomTom that my daughter owns sits unhappily alone now and my laptop is not used so often. I will get an ipad when it's available as I like to read in bed and my laptop will go down the back to be used for banking, or whatever. I have gps in my car and the wipers and lights are automatic. It tells me if I am backing up too near to anything and when the individual tyres need to be checked. The lights come on automatically and I never need to lock it, it just knows and does it itself and switches everything off. I have to steer it and push down on the accelerator and brake and that is called driving.
What a spoilt lot we have become with everything at our fingertips. The Dalai Lama once said that when he was poor, he would walk the hills and mountains for exercise, take in the beautiful colours and wonders of nature and now he is rich he sits on an exercise bike in a hotel room. It doesn't really make a lot of sense, does it ! I may ask the car dealer if the next model they bring out washes itself, that would be handy I think...............oh god, what am I saying.

I log onto RSVP with my iPhone at home. Easy peasy.. but a simplified version like Facebook app for iPhone would be easier

iPhone app for RSVP please!!! That would
be a 5 star from this side!! Excellent idea!

Great new iPhone app/ site
Gowalla.com it is the next big thing and is global. Perfect for a dating tool, and is fun.
Just getting it all set up now, but has a big take up in Australia already. It uses your GPS phone location to give you merit badges for visiting new places and suggesting others.
You can see who is at a place before you get there as well.

Dating app on the iPhone? Why not!
I am borderline surgically attached my iPhone anyway (seriously, I don't think it is ever more than about 2m away from me, unless I've gone swimming or for a run) it'd just give me something else to use it for.... and something else to chew through the batteries..
Lots of work would have to go into the UI though, there's so much information to get into that little screen, unless it was well laid out, it would get pretty unwieldy.
Maybe something akin to the new Facebook app layout? I really like what they've done there.
I use Tweetie on my phone instead of Tweetdeck, and have recently discovered the joys of Skyping from my phone. (OK, you can't use video - but sooo much better than being tied down to your PC).
Also, if anyone's looking for a good (free!) game - I suggest Word Ace. I'm addicted.

The iPhone Apps I mostly use are:
* Facebook - facebook app
* TweetDeck - twitter app
* Urbanspoon - nearby restaurants
* Shazam - recognises songs for you
* Bejeweled 2 - fun matching game
* Fring - ICQ/MSN/Jabber/YIM
* MotionX Poker - poker dice
* Apple Hold'em - Texas Hold'em Poker
An RSVP iPhone App would have to include the ability to Shake to get a random 9 Two-way search possible partners in my area matching my Ideal Partner.

Tomtom have the best GPSr devices out there. Please don't get a Navman.. EVER!
I have one and it's slow and terrible.
I went to a Tandy not long ago and the staff agreed. They even said the Navman representative couldn't get the new Platinum line to work properly ;)
I will be getting the Tomtom iPhone application as soon as it's out.. along with a windscreen mount for it.
I chose a Tomtom One XL for my father last year and he loves it!

With one thing and another, I haven't been online much (well, the 'extracurricular' stuff, anyway). Screen reading software, 'speaks' the text on your digital documents. I use two voices ... one an Australian male, that I use for English documents, emails and web pages. Web pages, because part of my job is to make sure that our web pages are accessible to screen readers, and the rest, because I find that proof-reading is easier if I can hear as well as see the text. The other is a French woman, as I'm learning French, and it helps with pronounciation when reading the news sites in French (France and French Canadian).
If you are interested, you need two kinds of 'software'. There is the speech engine, I use TextAloud, and then you can choose the voices you like best. I have AT&T Juliette for French and ScanSoft Lee for the Australian male voice.

Hi Laf, I don't know if the Tom Tom we have has bluetooth but I thought it did, pretty sure it has. Have to agree with you about the robotic american voice, insulting to the eardrums. Ours has been set to this lovely sort of Dublin accent, soft tones. What a laugh, but it is a fabulous gadget and far more useful than i ever thought it would be. We have 'home' programmed into it, sounds like ET doesn't it, but wherever you are, just press home and it directs you in the quickest way. Also another feature was taking you around scheduled detours, very clever little thing I think. Good luck with your searching, just beware of paying too much as the range of price is huge. What is screen reading software ? I don't use the Tom Tom but i have bluetooth for the mobile and it just answers and broadcasts thru the radio.

Hi Perth,
Checked out the HN sale on the GPS devices today ... thinking about one with Bluetooth ... then I would have a hands-free device as well ... those are a bit pricey even with the sale though! Doing a rethink/rationalisation tonight. Noticed that the NavMan version had a voice "Lee" which is the same as my screen reading software ... not as good as Sean Connery, but still nice. Oddly, I find all the US American robot voices really odd, artificial and even annoying ... guess that is a sign that one has been in a foreign country too long ... or long enough ... ;-)

Hi Laf, No you have a choice of accents that you wish to hear, she just happens to like this soft irish one. I think from memory the one I purchased is the Tom Tom Xl, about $350 or $380 can't remember now as I bought it last April, one year old. It is so much better than I first thought and you can programme addresses into it and then wherever you are, just hit that preprogrammed address and it will take you there. If you wish to travel to a different destination just programme individually and then, of course, hit home when coming back. It is so easy and much more useful than I oriinally thought. What else, I can't think, but it is extremely good and she uses it all the time. I don't know about Sean Connery, but this Irish guy is very nice !

:-D
Been thinking about a navigation device. 'beautiful Irish accent'? ... does it cost extra? :-) The voice would be important ... can I get a Sean Connery??
:-D

I think the Tom Tom is the best navigation tool. I bought one for my daughter for her birthday and it is absolutely amazing. It guides her with directions, speech, shows speed limits, does detours if there are road closures and even has blue tooth for the telephone. She does what the Tom Tom tells her if she is travelling home from a destination she is not familiary with. Just hits 'home' on the screen and Tom Tom with his beautiful Irish set voice brings her home every time. Amazing little gadget and far better than I thought it would be.

I recently saw a demonstration of photo recognition and tagging (feature of iLife??).
It would be stalker-ish if there was an application that you could use to take a picture of someone in the street and match up with a photo on RSVP. Hope there are restrictions on that.

"Also like the navigation"
I did see a demonstration on an iPhone in our MacOne store yesterday of how easy it was to use Google Maps Street Veiw. Very nice.
:-D

The good thing about an iPhone is that it knows your exact location. What if you could turn your iphone on and it pops up with photos of potential dates who are nearby. That might be handy but it would still need to keep your exact location private. Wouldn't want anyone stalking me!

I am clueless about what my phone can offer to me...and I have to have it off most of the day...cos of my job...also I can only access rsvp from home computer too...good old net nanny at work...now that I've said that, I guess it could bypass that server...hmmmm...nahhh...they'd catch me using it:))
Posted by: istj54 at March 28, 2009 10:18 AM
ps. Also like the navigation. All it really does is put all the useful applications in one handset instead of having to cart aorund a few with you. I find that handy and it works very well. I would hope that they find out how to do this shortly in a smaller handset so it will fit into my pocket better.

I like the i phone weather reports that I get, they are useful to me in my job. As for safe calling, just ask the phone carrier you are with and punch the code into the phone prior to making the call. Can be used both on mobiles and home phones and doesn't cost a cent.
Posted by: iaminperth at March 27, 2009 10:06 PM
Don't have an iPhone ... only played with them a few times. I mostly use the 'phone', phonebook and camera (most often to take a picture of something in a shop and send it to one of my children when I'm shopping for them) functions on my phone. I prefer all of the other applications on my Palm.
Can't think of anything particularly RSVP related for an app that isn't covered adequately by the phone. Communications can be complicated and multi-layered enough without surrounding it by 'features'.
Oh, just thought of a useful one ... a safe-calling application - I checked out the prices on the safe-calling through this site, and it would be tough to afford that safety.

oh I don't know MAD....this has improved out of sight this week......could they be listening at last? or just worried about loss of revenue?
Posted by: benjaminbutton at March 27, 2009 2:38 PM
Above all it would have to be user friendl, unlike this site which can be incredibly frustrating to users
