You don't need to be a classically trained vocalist or seasoned musician to know good shower acoustics when you hear them. Bathroom tiles work wonders for that amplified sound quality. Do you think this reverb has something to do with the inner songbird that escapes as soon as you start to rinse? Why do you think so many (if not all) people develop an uncontrollable urge to belt out a smashing vocal performance in the shower? Forget the gifted singers out there who sing at any opportunity, anywhere and everywhere. Why is the shower the chosen stage for the closet singer?
Why are vocal gymnastics not inspired in the bathtub, for example? Is it because a bath is primarily still and silent, whereas the noisy spatter of a shower can be used to mask your vocal imperfections? Is it because a shower 'waters down' all of your off notes? Is it because carrying a tune is not so much of an issue when there's shampoo and water lodged in your ears? Or is it as simple as it being a relaxed and private atmosphere where you are totally uninhibited to sing your heart out? Why do you sing in the shower?

I mainly sing Whitney Houston songs in the shower.

i have a waterproof radio in my shower (much to the amusement of my children) but there is nothing better than a good singalong first thing in the morning and a good boppy tune to dance and sing a long to to destress at the end of a long day. i'm singing in the rain, just singing in the rain trala trala

Okay, here's another neglected blog!!! When I read "Shower Singers" I wanted to tell you all that my neighbours complimented me on my shower singing voice just recently. It was quite uplifting being complimented at all so I accepted it gratefully!

Ah yes I sing in the shower and not just to warm up my voice to sing elsewhere. The steam and warm water is good for dry sleepy throats and vocal chords. The tiles give a pleasant ring and buoyant acoustic. And why not? I get clean and have fun! I tend to sing bits of whatever I have to sing next time I'm on. Shower singers rock!

Hi SusieQTpie here. I love to sing from the bathroom and while driving to work. It makes me feel good I am starting my day happy and positive. Dance music in the morning and softer music on my way home. It works for me. I am full of energy from the time I parked my car greeting all the people I meet cheering people in the hospital I worked asking me where do I get my energy? Singing keeps my spirits high.
Posted by: susieqtpie at September 21, 2009 5:49 PM
I will sing anything, anywhere, anytime. I understand this may form part of the reason for me being single, but it's important to just GET IT OUT. Besides there was no other category on RSVP I could join. D'oh!
I GOTS TO BELONG!!!!!!!

I have to admit, I'm not sure of the concept fo showering in a bathroom without a radio, I need all the backing I can get :)
Posted by: brisnut at June 28, 2009 8:49 PM
Hey fellow shower singers, I'm Boyd.
Yup, just love singing in the shower.....it sounds so much better in the shower. Elvis, Elton & Neil Diamond are my faves to bellow out. I did sing at a karaoke night and loved it...now plucking up the courage to do it again; duet anyone?
Posted by: lafreek at April 22, 2009 8:56 PM
As soon as I get into that shower I just feel so relaxed and want to sing to my hearts content! It is possible I may have a new friend to accompany me soon as my new kitten seems to have a love of water and claws at the shower door trying to get in with me..lol He could miaow something possibly from "Cats"..now that would be an interesting rendition....smiles...

I use to always sing in the shower until one fateful evening when I was singing away ... lungs going to full capacity and my son was standing outside the bathroom door recording it on his phone. He took it to school and played it to all his friends. To this day I have never heard the end of it. It's amazing how the acoustics of the bathroom can even make a fart sound melodical (is that a word?).

this is an awful lot of philosophising I thought it was fairly straight forward no-one can hear me therefore i am the worlds greatest singer

I was driving one beautiful sunny day up to the Nth coast belting out a tune from my Leonard Cohen CD, and some young guys came up to overtake but rode along on my right side , cause I didn't know they had done that deliberatly, I thought they couldn't overtake me, anyway they sped off cheering and waving . We all had a laugh, cause I was busted.

learning all the lyrics is a good idea, and nothing wrong with waterproof radios for a bit of inspirational backing. Posted by swanie at December 12, 2008 12:53 AM ~ Hi there :))))
I wish someone would invent *Head Up Display* for my shower screen & windscreen. Now that would be cool & save me stumbling around when I forget the words of songs.
No amount of steam will improve my poor tone..... a few too many wines tends to loosen the concern of who I inflict with the whine :)))) I'm one of those who just can't carry a tune in a bucket...... but my passion & love for music balance the shortcomings.
Merry Christmas & Gentle Blessings

Definately yes, Elida! What a great idea. Its a good release to have a sing anytime, but a particularly good idea amongst some steam, which loosens up the lungs and improves your singing, and the bathroom miniamplitheatre can even make the almost tonedeaf sound appealing... sometimes. It is an inner feelgood moment to belt out a few tunes and be happy with it, so all you shower singers ignore the neighbour frowns and bring it on. learning all the lyrics is a good idea, and nothing wrong with waterproof radios for a bit of inspirational backing. what say it folks, is Aquatic Idol on the cards for the future?

Softfeather - yeah well I think I'll be around Boxing day. Nothing planned for me. (boohoo) so will be happy to share some time with some of you guys.
Be good if we had a chat room. Probably moderators won't be around for our posts to keep it flowing.
Oh - The Timewarp, yes we all did that. Everyone in the audience was up at the end of the show. Very cool!
Looking forward to your parfait recipe. Yum.

Flowering frangipani, jasmine, gardenia & my favourite hymenocallis littoralis. All white flowering scented flowers that look spectacular in the moon light....
The gentle sound of water tumbling down over the rocks. Frogs calling out to each other, crickets cricketing, & the slosh of water gently lapping over the rim of the bath.... ahhh yum... yep got the picture...very vividly.... :))))

No I didnt Woody but I do give my Snow Patrol CD a good loud airing fairly regularly!
Missrule I can see I'd enjoy myself at your place .. someone not only mad enough to stand out in the rain but sing out there as well .. I'm surprised the dogs didnt join in .. my mini foxy would have, he loved to sing with the least encouragement, beautiful little mate that he was!
Well done to you and your daughter!!!
Posted by: waternymph47 at December 11, 2008 2:09 PM
My daughter and I stood out in a raging storm last night, getting soaked in the process, singing the Aussie version of Jingle Bells ("Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer's day"), watched by a pair of bemused dogs and giggling our heads off. There's been so much rain in Coffs lately, our joints are in danger of rusting up :-)
PS I sing in the bath too. Imperfections? What imperfections? :-D

Hi Amber I know just what you mean about SA water .. or lack of it. Now that I'm in NSW.. when I find myself grumbling each time I have to dash out and grab washing in off clothesline before it gets rained on .. I give myself a mental jog.
Still think walking in the rain with someone special is great too!
It's warm and tropical enough here to make me want to try too.
Were I not in a 'goldfish bowl' here some nights I'd love to go stand in the rain in the back yard but someone might be calling in the 'Men in their clean white coats .. and they're coming to take me away Ha HA"!
Isn't it great to embarass your kids with your singing! Don't stop .. they are more likely to have fond memories of you singing in the shower and be easier to get on with than if you were the one telling them to turn down the music!
Soon after I moved here. when my daughter came to lunch one day she walked in and straight away turned down my music .. I had to laugh.
She's been trying to raise her baby in a quiet environment and is finding that, like his Nanna, he loves his music and now he knows how to twiddle with knobs and buttons(just 1 yr old) he keeps turning up the volume .
With encouragement from Nanna, he and I will drive his Mum nuts for sure. He loves his bath so the next step is just to get him singing in there as loud as possible!

Shame you're not my neighbour 'cause then I wouldn't feel guilty about being the only person around who turns up the volume. I live in a area with kids heaps younger than me & they are so well behaved I never hear them...probably 'cause they're never home :))))
It's a Mama's right to annoy their offspring. The air guitar thingo can slide but if you've never sang to your hairbrush then you have not done the full monty.... :))))

I love singing in the shower, but much harder to do these days when SA is so dry that you feel guilty if you take too long in the shower. Apparently it does rain in Australia, just not in Adelaide, or within a 100+ kms.
I also turn up the stereo and let it rip all over the house when I am home alone.
Kids hate it of course, especially my 19 year old when he comes to visit, so embarrassing "someone might hear you", he complains.
Though my daughter and youngest son are pretty good these days, they just close the lounge, hall and bedroom doors, turn up the TV and ignore me!
I think they've given up.
Of course, most of their music is okay too (I'm not that sure they like me liking it, though) I often sing to their songs too.
And in the car.
Haven't done the air guitar bit, though!
Posted by: amberlight58 at December 11, 2008 7:51 AM
Hey softfeather - I have a clawfoot bath outside. (hehe)
I adore clawfoot baths. So much character. My kinda thing. lol. I also adore my bath. Have one neally every night. (In the inside one though). Is my 'me' time. For relaxing, thinking, meditation, ok, ok, escape from the kids, lol.
But seriously I adore the bath. Always have beautiful bathroom scents, oils, soaps, candles, and sometimes music or self-improvement cd's. Over the years the whole ritual of the bath has become really special to me. And actually it has followed on with my kids. They all adore a bath. Even my boys!
Depending on the music, there can be a bit of singing coming from the bathroom, and from one of my sons in particular. He loves his music in there and has been known to belt out a bit of a number.
Now, off to the shower.....
"In the Velvet Darkness of the blackest night, burning bright, there's a guiding star........." (My favourite song from Rocky Horror, which I saw last night.) Is back stuck in my head. At the show last night, my daughter said that's the song you used to always sing in the shower. (hehe)

Posted by: tallerthantom at December 9, 2008 6:23 PM ~ As long as you're enjoying yourself that's what it's about.... having fun :) If you can't play alone how will you be open to play with a mate.. bath time should be fun.
Most adults played in the bath when they were little ones. It was fun time, the end of the day & a time to ready for sleep or to relax.
Why as adults do people stop these rituals.... Is it because of conditioning or is because we forget what fun is about.

If you're comfortable singing in the kitchen why not move it to the shower.... you might discover something about yourself you never knew.... be a devil..... :)
Posted by: softfeather at December 9, 2008 9:22 PM
Woody I'm with you ... Harmonising in the kitchen.
It started when my sister hated helping to wash or wipe the dishes .. Mum encouraged singing .. probably because if she could hear us harmonising doing Everly Brothers duets she knew we were still in the kitchen .. not fighting nor disappearing as my sister often did!
Over the years Ive sung with a Folk group then a couple of Pop bands in Alice Springs in my early 20s .. went on to sing with a Swiss Village Choir in the 8 years I lived there.
After returning to Oz and back in Alice .. I was recognized at a venue and asked to do a guest spot with a couple of Musos. Sadly once they found out I could speak German .. they kept asking me to do the full German version of Wooden Heart ... Hate that song! LOL
Shower is a place for refreshment and relaxation .. not singing there! :-)
Posted by: waternymph47 at December 9, 2008 6:27 PM
I love sing along as long as the volume is loud enough that no one can hear me.

Posted by: tallerthantom at December 9, 2008 6:23 PM
The shower has great acoustics for singing, sometimes I feel like I can actually sing. The car is another favourite place of mine to sing, I spend many hours driving long distances (being the gypsy I am) so singing is a way to relieve the boredom. I do need a prompt machine on the dash for the lyrics tho.. there is a lot of lalaladeda lala goes on.
Posted by: blueyedblond at December 9, 2008 5:33 PM
Gee - I only sing in the kitchen while cooking .... can't remember ever singing in the shower.
Posted by: woodnwine at December 9, 2008 3:34 PM
Maybe it slows us down and we are more aware of our thoughts. Posted by jenniferhi at December 8, 2008 7:09 PM ~ Jen I wonder how many people do slow down when they shower. Or is it a case of another bodily function and the ritual is done on auto pilot.
In the shower we are at one with all five senses. Sadly many people don't understand how to connect with their senses. Yes there's the privacy to let the singer out 'cause the acoustics might be good but I feel there is more to it than that.
Is it a case of being a closet rock star or being uninhibited in a very natural environment to really connect with our bodies and our senses.
As for a bath.... give me a whopper claw foot bath like back on the farm..... I'd sing dixie to still have a tub like that now... splish splash I was takin' a bath :))))
Posted by: softfeather at December 9, 2008 3:41 AM
Geez, for a minute there I thought Elida might have been having a go at my love of certain Rock Stars. lol. Phew.
Singing in the shower. Nah, don't normally do that (well, ok maybe sometimes) but I do do my affirmations. Adding voice to an affirmation gives it more power (in my belief). Firms it up in your mind. Gives more incentive to get on with your goals and taking action.
Water is known to increase the thought processes. Lots of thinking is generated around water. I find this is very true. Maybe it slows us down and we are more aware of our thoughts.
I would think a lot of composers would create their music while near water. Be it under the shower, in the bath, or perhaps next to a beautiful river.
Re the singing in the shower, isn't the steam good for soothing out a rough voice.
She sings "Everytime you go away......." GLAB.
