Favourite Wii game: World of Goo! (gotta love the goo)

Probably not considered a gadget per se, but I have a 42U high Sun Enterprise 5500 in my room (computer case physically as tall as myself, 2M deep etc), couldn't fully power it even if I tried so put a bar fridge in the bottom of it.
At the service panel where the key is to turn it on/off I was thinking of installing an LED array to make the box have a little face :).
Anyone else do stuff like that?
As for the virus protection topic, run your computer well and you shouldn't ever need virus protection. (not running windows and not running x86 helps this a lot though)

@ tigergirl18 Yes I have thw WiiFit Plus, which is much better than the first WiiFit. Not only because there are three extra Yoga and Muscle training exercises, not to mention balance games, but you can also create a workout regime and weigh your pets (why you'd want to register your cat or dog on the WiiFit is beyond me though).
If you're really interested in exercising with the Wii, I'd recommend EA Active. It has something called a 30 Day Challenge, and you do all sorts of exercises - squats, bicep work, cardio, etc. It's Wii Balance Board compatible but not essential, and it's uite a lot of fun too.
Hope this helps =D.

Anybody got a Wii with WiiFit/Sports? Interested to see if it's worth buying one. :) Not really been a fan of Nintendo until I got a DS. Was going to get a PSP or an Xbox! lol
Posted by: tigergirl18 at November 29, 2009 9:01 AM
Hi people, on the topic of gaming consoles Id just like to give praise to the PSP. I mean what an allrounder this machine is. For instance, it plays games- everyone knows that, it also plays movies, mp3's, holds photos, the battery lasts for around six hours fully charged, you can browse the internet and even go on msn etc as long as you have wireless internet(such as macdonalds has). Its compact enough to carry anywhere and ive found it especially good for filling in time on that long train trip to sydney for work. PSP have been compared to PS2 graphics wise and there are plenty of games etc available for it. In my opinion its the best gadget out there. What do you think guys?

The TRON trailers are up on YouTube and well worth a look. Surrogates is out later this month too, and Avatar later this year as well... With District 9 thrown in, this has been a great year for Sci-Fi! (About time!)

I used AVG (paid version) for years and found it to be really reliable. At the moment I'm using McAfee (because it came free with my current computer) and it seems to be doing a fine job too... As someone mentioned earlier, I think a lot of the major anti-viruses are pretty similar...

Did you hear they are doing a re-make of the movie TRON? With Jeff Bridges

I still have a couple of cartons of robot bits, from when my son was doing junior Robocup soccer at school. We had to put the dining table out on the verandah so he could set up the soccer field in the dining room. Blankets over the windows to have the right sort of lighting for the infrared ball and so forth.
It was good when he finished, and packed it all up and the dining table came back in. But then he moved on to modifiying cars and I had engine parts in the dining room for the next year.
On his recommendation I use AVG and also check with Adaware

I think the PS3 is an amazing piece of hardware, though I don't have the same contoller dramas that you have mistalonely, rewiring controllers is extreme, but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do to make the game work the way you want it too...
Has anyone upgraded their Ps3 hard drive yet? I am thinking about it, as it appears to be totally basic, just wanted some feedback from anyone that has done it before.
Posted by: ab1983 at August 31, 2009 7:48 PM
HI, just for the sake of posting, who else loves the ps3,not the newest gadget but its so handy for so many things. Only thing that gives me SH#!S is that just like all other expensive consoles theres no inbuilt function for the reassignment of controlpad functions. Im an oldskool gamer and prefer the oldfashioned 'legacy' style button and stick options (not available in most ingame control option menus),I am so unco at using todays common control functions that i imported via ebay three lowpriced PS2 control pads from hongkong and physically rewired the stick functions. Crazily geekily insane, no tvery interesting, but there you have it. Posting for the sake of posting!

AVG is free to download, which doesn't necessarily mean its the best out there. IN fact pretty much all anti virus programs will do the job. But it comes down to how fast a company is willing to release a update to combat against the latest threats that literally inhibit the internet on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. So basically what im saying is, if AVG found a new threat online, it may take them 3-5 days to program an "antidote" to release as a download to patch what you have installed, but it may take Norton 1-2 days, and Consumer Associates 2-4 days to make the same antidote...
And yes, some anti virus programs can be more intrusive that they should be with watching processes in the background for possible threats that's contribute to slowing down your PC, Norton's is notorious for this in previous releases, but have only improved with PC being more powerful in recent times also that the performance hiccup is unnoticeable. I currently use Trend Internet Security and have used Consumer Associated internet security in the past also. These programs are both great and on some occasions have DAILY updates to keep you secured. I don't like Norton, purely based on the fact that you hear people having more issue with performance as most people have stated here. But like with most things in life, it comes down to trial and error, and not being sucked in to emails that claim you have One million dollars waiting for you in Switzerland. Seriously, are there people that stupid in the world? lol
Posted by: brettski011 at August 7, 2009 11:10 AM
AVG is probably the best anti-virus product out there. The Internet suite is a bit average so it's best combined with Zonealarm (the free version and only the firewall component). Using the pair of them should keep you pretty much safe as houses

My computer came back from being fixed a week ago and it had over 23 viruses and multiple malicious objects non of which McAfee could detect or fix. I'm very disappointed with McAfee now and am currently running the latest free version of AVG.
Posted by: euphoriarose at July 19, 2009 4:58 PM
I dont run any virus protection either. I consider most of the anti-virus are bit of overheading slowing down my system. If your system is Vista or W7, I think the default security is just pretty much enough to stop most virus. For the rest of virus, anti-virus cant stop them either. For machines at work or public place anti-virus is always a good idea simply because if the machines did get virus nobody can blame you for anything.
Posted by: edi1984 at July 17, 2009 2:12 AM
I run my PC without virus protection, I set all the security to medium, am careful of what sites I go to and only open an email if I know the sender. I consider many of the virus protection programs are a bit of a scam, they seem to find virus's way too often for my belief.
Having said that, I'm more computer savvy than many people, so virus protection for them is a good idea.
Also get rid of the preview pane in your mail reader because once you 've previewed a bad email it's just as bad as opening it fully.

Thank you hvalac, I ended up getting Trend Pro 2008 what are your thoughts on it. Norton is a disaster and I would never get it. AVG is no longer free.
Posted by: time4latte at May 16, 2009 2:18 PM
Anti-virus wise my mates seem to like mcafee , never really gone for it though I usually just stick with avg anti-virus v7.1 works fine and gets most viruses, the new avg v8 is a POS (peice of shit) adds to many unwanted and useless extras, as for norton antivirus that is 1 of the worst if not the worst program you can actually install on your computer, massively gives a perfromance decrease to any system and most of the time it picks up less viruses than avg. Also if you dont already have this i'd recommend "spy bot - search and destroy" for spyware, very easy to use, gets rid of any form of spyware and picks up stuff that ad-aware doesn't pickup and isn't very resource hungry.
Posted by: hvalac at May 16, 2009 1:19 PM
Thank you, iaminperth and HH. It looks like McAfee gets two votes. I have also heard that Nortons would be a bad choice. The GPS is certainly a terrific gadget and I think sadly, we may see the end of the old UBD or Gregorys.
Posted by: time4latte at May 12, 2009 5:09 AM
McAfee works for me. Doesn't take too much space and is very user friendly. Due to getting a virus a while back I had to contact support and they were also very helpful. I think support is the key when purchasing any new product. We have a new iphone and a gps. Not a great gadget family but what we have is pretty darned good. I find being able to schedule appointments and also rosters as well as using the gps system on the iphone just cuts out the necessity for additional diaries and equipment to carry around. The separate gps my daughter uses and it is also fabulous and she can always find her way home. The gaps also lets her know speed limits and if there are any hazards ahead. Bluetooth is also a feature, not that it's used much as she is not a great mobile phone talker and prefers to use text. Both gadgets are really helpful in our lives.
Posted by: iaminperth at May 11, 2009 10:19 PM
Hi Latte - I'm currently running Trend Micro "PC-cillin" which is very good. I can also recommend McAffee. AVG - Avira have a free version that you can try and this is good also. One which I cannot recommend is Norton Antivirus - had a terrible time with them - Symantec have lousey service ie trying to get patches etc - then they try to bill you for being no help at all. I'd definitely give them a miss. HH

OK ... there are reportedly 2615 members of this community ... why does it feel so cold and empty here?!?
Challenge: those who have never posted ... or those who have ... *post something*!
How can someone who is even vaguely geekish not have a favourite gadget? Some of mine have to do with the 'slow' movement ... ie drop spindles ... they are still gadgets - albeit *very* low tech. Do the intros to the topics put people off? Take ownership of the blogs!

Sounds very Star Trek ... like Geordie's (?) glasses.
(OK ... my comments were scrapped ... can't imagine why, though.)

Posted by: lafileuse at April 2, 2009 6:30 AM
I have seen some wrapglasses online that had a digital magnifying camera built in, won't be long and you will be able to tryuely merge the cybernet and reality as you stroll around town. O r possibly for people like me with sight impairment we could adjust color spectrums and magnify stuff when needed.
Goodbye to glasses possibly, replaced by camera's and LCD monitors in a sunglass frame?

1000tc!! We *do* miss out in the country here. :-/
My alter ego? :-) I like that!
I suppose this and other topics bring out my more frivolous side. (I used to have a second pair of spectacles that was a bit more flamboyant - ie it had colours - than my usual pair, that I would wear if I didn't have any meetings ... my frivolous glasses. I also like to bring my Dell laptop to Apple meetings ... lets me feel like a rebel!)
Posted by: lafileuse at March 28, 2009 2:25 PM
1000 is so much better with Egyptian cotton. Gosh your alter ego on the 'other' site portrays a totally different side of you than you are trying to portray here.

Anybody there?
Just splashed out and got a cordless drill .... Mmmmmmm Bunnings......
(and on a totally non-gadget note, upgraded my bed linen at a sale after going to a meeting in Sydney ... the organisation sponsored attendees at a swish hotel for the night. Who knew what a difference 500tc Egyptian cotton makes??!! Utterly flabbergasted! It's worth it's weight in sleeping pills ... and Marjoram oil, and aromatherapy baths, and everything else I've tried.)
Posted by: lafileuse at March 25, 2009 7:58 PM
Planning a new 'gadget' purchase, though not an electronic or high tech one. Just heard of a manufacturer of drop spindles here in Australia. Will be checking it out. (They could be electronic ... I wonder if you can get spindles with a built-in device to measure RPM?)
:-D

Such obsessions are not limited to 'technology' or any other kind of sub-genre. It would be ridiculous to suggest that those who might embrace technology can be any different to those who are governed by their inability to moderate their own desires.
In other words, it matters not what possession it is. It could be a walrus or a neutronium-powered pogo stick; you know that there is probably someone who'd foam at the mouth if you severed it from them.
Ah, materialism... it's so refreshing to observe amongst lesser sentients.

The closest things to gadgets I've bought recently ... well, since the holiday spend-up anyway (been spending money on DVDs), are some plug-in circuit breakers to take the place of fuses. Not very exciting, but they have little switches in different colours.

Your screwdriver sounds very useful ... handy tools are always great to have. I love going to Bunnings when I can get to one ... I really like hardware ... and little brass fittings. Current project is replacing doorknobs in my house, but I've mislaid my electric drill. I need a homing gadget for my tools. I seem to get side-tracked into and out of little projects. I bought a proper tool box this year and am trying to train myself to put things back in it. :-)

You may be snoring when you fall into a deep sleep and that is waking you up D. You can have that checked out at sleep centres referred by a GP of course. I was given a screwdriver with about 20 bits with it and it came with a bracket to hang on the wall. I am always screwing things into my backyard fence and it is so unbelievably handy and now sits on the back of my pantry door within easy reach. It's bright yellow and I use it so much it's unbelievable. Also have four DV D set of the Rolling Stones Biggest bang tour, just love it, brings back very fond memories.

I did! My darling son gave me a 'Sleeptracker" watch. It monitors the movements you make during periods of light sleep, and records these. You can set an alarm time and a window during which you want to wake up, and it will wake you when you are in a period of light sleep, rather than at a specific time when you may be deeply asleep. Because it records your nightly sleep pattern, you can use it with notes you take about that day and night to work out how to improve your sleep. It's helping already. I've never had a problem falling asleep, but staying asleep in the wee small hours is difficult.
...and I bought myself a little device to allow me to digitise my cassette tapes. :-D

You could also try a Citizen Eco-Drive. They're pretty cheap and just need light to work and won't require a battery change for years. I pulled an old one out the other day that had been in a drawer for a few years, put it under strong light for a while and it's still going.

Get yourself a kinetic watch-no batteries and no winding needed.
Seiko have a large range.
They utilise the wrists movements to generate kinetic energy.
They are energy efficient and environmentally safe.

I had a lovely gadget story that appears to have been flushed down the cyber toilet. Hmmm.
My gadget of choice would have to be my ipod.
The gadget I'd most like to flush down any toilet would be my mobile.
Yeah I know, kind of hard to live without it now... Gee, I get fed up with all the crap sms messages and the 4 sentences that have been condensed into 3 abbreviated words!
c u l8er..... :)

Best gadgets have had that never out of my hands is my new latest nokia mobile, a multi purpose features, internet, camera, video cam, GPS, ipod, storing files, emails, photos, contacts, a complete package, very handy.
The most amazing unbelievable varieties of new advance high tech gadgets I've seen is in Akihabara Tokyo, Japan. A place of Robotic cybernetics-gadgets.

Gadgets .... I am addicted to a couple of those. my laptop and TomTom. First one keeps me connected to the world out there and the second one takes me to see places. Not a great fan of iPods (would rather read than having those head phones stuck in my ears).
