What's Your Sport?

Having joined this community, you've indicated that you're a sports fanatic. So here's your chance to prove it! Let loose and talk about the sport you're mad about and why you love it so much. You may be an all round sports lover, or a fan devoted only to soccer. Maybe you love all water sports or you only have time for basketball?

Do you play the sport yourself or are you a dedicated follower (or both!)? Is it your favourite team or sports star that makes a fanatic out of you? Is it your own sporty skillfulness that made you an enthusiast? Or is it that you love being a spectator in the exciting atmosphere of a sports stadium? Whatever your sport of choice is and whatever your reasons, tell us all about it!

All you Sports Fanatics out there should absolutely join Masters Athletics! There's no better group of people in the world. Not only can you compete at club level, and when I say compete I mean test yourself to improve your best times, distances and heights not beat anyone else, you can go to State, National or even International level. Very few activities give such a wide and varied scope of experiences. You can run - short, middle, long, hurdles, cross country; jump - high, long, triple; and, my favourite, throw - hammer, shot, discus, javelin, weight. If you are good at a few different sections try the multi-events - heptathlon for women, decathlon for men, field and throws pentathlon for both sexes. There are clubs everywhere in all states and territories. ACT has a sensational Veterans club as does NSW (I'm an active member of both). You will get to meet the most fantastic people all of whom are incredibly friendly, happy, fit, healthy and do not look their age (had to say that)! If you enjoy travel Masters Athletics is a great fit. The National titles are held in a different capital city each year, country titles are held in regional areas, Masters Games can be held anywhere in the world. Come along and join up, you are only trying to better yourself and, if your best gives you medals, that's a bonus. Personal Bests are far more important than medals. The first question you will always be asked is not, "did you win?", it's "where you happy with your time, distance, height?" Were they PBs? No-one really cares who wins as long as they, and you, know you matched or exceeded your own goals. Then it's on to the after-meet get-togethers. That's when the 'serious' fun starts.

I am a huge AFL - Western Bulldogs fan... what a disappointing start to the season, don't know where the form has gone. Won't waiver my support for them though!

AFL: Richmond Tigers. NBL: Melbourne Tigers. Netball: Melb Vixens. Also like cricket (tests can be a bit boring but like the one dayers & Twenty20), baseball/softball, gymnastics, tennis (sometimes), iceskating, gaelic footy, etc, etc.. Not into rugby, soccer, fishing (if you can call it a sport) or golf. I think I'd rather watch paint dry... lol :)

Is Wii classed as sport??? Haha I'm a chick mad on AFL (Geelong) & Baseball (Philadelphia).
Also don't mind cricket, tennis, swimming, Rubgy (Storm) & motorracing.
I'm still trying to learn the intricacies of Baseball so if anyone else out there is into it and can help, please let me know! =)

I like lots of sports.
In soccer I support Manchester City, Celtic and Barcelona.
In Tennis my favourites include Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Richard Gasquet, Sam Stosur, Jelena Jankovic and Anna Chakvetdaze.
I also like Formula One and go for Mark Webber!

I'm a rugby girl from way back. Been to RWC's here and UK, Bledisloes... The start of season smell - freshly mown grass and dencorub - nothing beats it.The politicking and bitching does get me annoyed though. Have experienced Anzac Day AFL at the MCG - amazing. Been burnt to a crisp at One Day and test cricket. I'll support most things... Get a buzz from all kinds of events.

Posted by: jupiter001 at June 14, 2009 10:35 PM

I'm a passionate supporter of the AFL... it's obvious who I support, but after kast nights effort we will not talk about that. I grew up around footy and could literally not live without it... I'm a winter girl because of it. ;)

I play basketball which I had to get back into after a 5 year break, but that is fun and keeps me fit in between the gym.

Also a hugh Spring Carnival fan... more so on the horses than the getting dressed up and consuming far too much alcohol (although that is all part of the fun too haha)

A year ago I ventured into mountain biking to get me away from boozing my weekends away from computer screens all week long in my career.

Since then, I have lost 30kg, and now race enduro mountain bike races.

Absolutely love the sport and the fitness that comes with it. Cant imagine a weekend without at least 1 venture into the bush, just to leave all the metro poser wannabe's to nurse their hangovers.

Posted by: ky76 at April 18, 2009 12:09 AM

well I'm a NRL fanatic in particular the QLD teams (of course). It started with the Broncos when they entered the league and now that i live in Townsville I am devoted to the Cowboys. I am even a licienced stalker being part of the Cowboys Supporters Team! And of course Titans are in my top 3 with Warriors and Souths making up my top 5. I never thought I would see the day when a kiwi team would be in my top 5 but the year that Warriors played Roosters in the GF, well need I say more - aint ever barracking for the Roosters! So kiwis have been in since! I like other sports too, played heaps growing up but injuries and work now get in the way. So just have to be content watching for now.

Posted by: makeadifference1 at November 30, 2008 10:53 AM - Yar... it's always good to beat the Pom's (at anything), hey? LoL.

Posted by: heart2heart57 at November 30, 2008 12:41 PM

Pity about the Wallabies and Wales. Losing the Captain 2 minutes in didn't help. Still 3 out of 4 isn't bad.

Even better, all 3 Southern Hemisphere Teams beat the Poms. Even this died in the wool Aussie was barracking for the All Blacks last night.

Posted by: makeadifference1 at November 30, 2008 10:53 AM

I follow the Aussies in all sports and codes, but AFL would have to be my favourite. The only thing it lacks is a true international competition, but maybe one day....

Having played both team and individual sports, for me, team sports are so much more rewarding. The successes are sweeter and the failures are more manageable when you have mates beside you sharing the same experiences.

I know I owe much of my personal development to being a member of sporting teams over the years.

Wasn't it George Of The Jungle who had to "Watch out for that tree!" ?
Now there's a way to keep fit .. swinging from trees .. I used to climb trees when I was a kid .. and hang upside down from them by my legs ... and no I didn't land on my head!!
Nowadays I'm getting quite good at Soduku and various brain training exercises :-)

Posted by: waternymph47 at November 18, 2008 7:46 PM

Favorite sport would have to be rally. The skill involved is remarkable, considering the varied surfaces and the fact conditions can change with every pass. It would also have to be one of the most dangerous forms of car racing. What out for that tree!!!!

Is Soduku a Martial Art?

Posted by: distinguishedgreying at November 18, 2008 5:15 PM

yep it sure is:) it is done with numbers though, and it keeps the grey matter nimble and quick

Is Soduku a Martial Art?

Posted by: distinguishedgreying at November 18, 2008 5:15 PM

Ha.. In the 1970s there was a cartoon ad featuring a fat bloke called Norm, Not Norm from Cheers but not too different. He was the quintessential Aussie sportsman - into anything SPORT as long as he was in front of the telly with a tinny in his hand. The campaign he headed was Life! Be in it! I find it humurously ironic that we are talking sport, not doing sport!

Posted by: distinguishedgreying at November 18, 2008 5:14 PM

I am a martial arts student. I am a yellow belt in both taekwondo and haidong gumdo...My goal is to reach black belt in taekwondo by at least 2011. I live and breathe taekwondo practically and its all i ever think about...anyone else like martial arts as much as i do?

Off to see some horsepower of a different variety today - 'the sport of Kings'.

Put hay in one end, and fertilizer comes out the other :) Should be fun watching these 1Hp models vying for track position.

All spruced up, some food, some drink, and 100,000 other nutbags all mingling and socializing. Might even be some Yabbies on the menu somewhere (winks at T ;)

Have a great Cup Day, y'all...

The paris to dakar rally is the ultimate car race, nothing else comes close man and machine against of the most hostile environments on the face of the planet.

Posted by: shellyplus2 at November 1, 2008 6:02 PM - Mmmmm... YUM! V8's. Had a few of those in my younger days. My poor old HQ PV had a 454 Chev in it. Dang that thing had some tow. There's nothing quite like that feeling of your bum burying itself into the seat when you hit the loud-pedal, and the drone from under the hood as 860 cfm of air gets sucked into through the 4-barrel, huh?

Posted by: heart2heart57 at November 1, 2008 6:15 PM

NRL, its not as good as the old days with the big hit ups and tackles with people like Robbo, Beetson & Tallis. But I still love going to a live game. I have 2 young girls that I am trying to teach some of the rules to them but I think its going to be a very slow process, they just dont have the interest that I did at their age. H2H Oct 25: what a great blog... you should be a writer.... I was with you you all the way except I was driving a V8, the sound, the vibration going through your body and not to mention the speed on takeoff....I miss my old V8

Posted by: lovetolaugh57 at October 27, 2008 1:37 PM - Yep - if it burns fuel, they'll have a race meeting for it somewhere in the USofA. Us Ozzies, on the other hand, are dumb enough to race Yabbies of all things... LMAO :)

Men's basketball. Tall, long legged and big footed men and their incredible ball handling skills. It's like poetry in motion.

Posted by: egernia at October 27, 2008 9:32 AM

If you can put petrol in it, and it makes a lot of noise, I'm into it :)

Seeing a broken white line turn into a solid white strip (on a race track, of course) is trully an amazing feeling. And it's extremely physical - more than most people realise. So much so, that it was a good excuse to go to the Gym to get 'in shape'. The upper body strength required in serious motor sport often goes unnoticed - 4 G's pulling on your head + helmet really takes it out of you.

And it's not just about going 'fast' - it's a complete art-form that requires 360 mental perception, smooth co-ordinated motor reflexes, and a brain capable of trying to calculate reason from complete chaos with split-second precision. A body that will cope with relentless pounding and dehydration, yet fingertips and inner-ear balance that can detect every minor nuance of movements as small as a centimetre while rocketing around a piece of black tarmac at 250-300 kmh.

During a race meeting, the body fills with an overdose of adrenalin. At days end, this transforms into natural endorphins, and leaves you with the most amazing feeling. For a while, the problems in the world just shrink into oblivion - you are at peace.

Speed, speed, gimme what I need... :)
