Golf not for Girls?

Golfguy.jpg

The stereotype around Golf is that it is a guy's' thing. A typical Golf course setting is usually a picture of lads rolling in with their stash of cheap beer for a weekend golf trip. Golf is also characteristically linked with retired men. Do you find this to be true? To get a better idea - when you think of golf, usually the thought of plaid pants, sweater vests, flat caps (all of which are predominantly male forms of clothing) spring to mind.

Why do you think this is? Do you agree? Do you know many women who enjoy the sport or play regularly? Perhaps some women have cottoned on and got out there to find a man! For many years, the only people on the course were older men dressed rather unfashionably. How about these days? Been on a course lately? Who is typically out there putting right now?

I love playing golf but it is so hard to find someone to play with as a lot of guys don't like playing with females and the ladies comps seem to be mainly during the week which is no good for working people.

That is why so many people get the impression that golf is for guys or older people as they are the ones that are on the course the most!!

I am a great lover of the sport and have played and caddied on many courses around Aus and some overseas. And will continue to do so for a long time to come, what a great way to meet new people, see new places and get execise at the same time.

So Why the question "Golf not for girls, do we not live in the 21st century. Over the past 10 years womans golf has come a long way, we now can play on saturdays we can have our competitions and in a lot of cases it is not the men objecting but the woman that are set in their ways and do not like changes, the thing is these days a lot of woman do have to work for a living (like myself) and only have saturdays to play.
So work the compromise, have the mid week ladies golf and create your saturday ladies comp you only need 4 people to make up a comp. compromise on your chamionships work it in with the ladies and men have 1 or 2 rounds during the week (ladies day) and the 3 & 4 on the weekend with the men. in this way everybody gets a chance to paticipate in the fun, trust me with a bit of communication between all parties I am sure the weekend lady player in many clubs will benefit that golf has come to the 21st century senses, like our club and many other clubs have.

Posted by: jac016 at December 13, 2008 1:43 PM - I live next door to a golf course, and they're always still whacking balls up to about 7:30pm. Maybe you need to find a course that stays open a bit longer?

Golf is not only a great sport but a great way to spend day and it doesn't matter whether you are male or female. I agree with frauleinsallybowles when it comes to the women's competitions only being held on weekdays; some of us have to work for a living. I currently go to a golf clinic every Saturday but don't play as often as I would like; hopefully I will find a permanent golf partner on RSVP one day soon.

OMG! Girls are people 2! I love golf - and wish I could find more partners - but only want to play with people who want to have fun and a laugh and not take it all so seriously! Gosh! There's enough room for the hard core and the hit and giggle type - although I do hit with seriousness and then have to giggle when i see how terrible that shot was - anyone want to play????

One of the tricky things for me as a keen fledgling golfer is that the competition golf where I live is all segregated by gender. And all the women's competitions are held during the weekdays, rather than on weekends. For working full-time kinda gals like myself, it makes it a major challenge to get out for a game unless one already has friends who golf. Quite frustrating!!

Posted by: maggie101 at November 1, 2008 9:05 PM - Of course it's a 'guy thing' - Der. Guys invented it. Then the women came along and said "What? You can't have this all to yourselves - we want to play too!" So, there you have it. If you like it, play it. If you don't, stay away.

Yes, it sure does tend to be a guy thing - always see lots of guys tearing up the course literally sometimes, with beer or similar in hand - it is just an excuse for a booze-up I think for some of them, particularly the younger ones. Me, I love the walk, the challenge, the beautiful surroundings and the endlessly exercise up hill, down bunkers and cross country! Bad game or not - you just keep coming back. Fortunately I have some friends who enjoy a casual game now and then - just play social these days - great fun! Go girls - join me.

PS. Am always looking out for more pleasant male company too....preferably without the alcohol in hand ...lol.

Golf is for everyone. I have brand new golf clubs, still in the shrink wrap... still waiting for someone to offer to teach me how to play... somehow I think the 19th hole will be my favourite.
