At 53 years of age, Greg Norman has moved up in the World Golf Rankings after this year's British Open Championship - 480 places up! The No.1 spot is currently held by 32 year old Tiger Woods, who first earned the title as a 21 year old child prodigy. So, is professional golf today reserved for the celebrity pin-ups and young guns? Tiger, and the likes of 28 year old Aussie, Adam Scott, bring the average age down amongst the world's top male golfers.
The trend seems to have also struck the females, with No.1 golfer Annika Sorenstam, 37, pushed down to No.2 by relative newcomer, 26 year old Lorena Ochoa. As a golfing fan, are you loyal to the Greg's or a follower of the newbie Lorena's? Does Greg's recent triumph highlight the fact that golf provides skilled players with enduring careers and is a game that can be enjoyed or played professionally at any age?

Posted by: truantwarrior at October 20, 2008 1:40 PM - Yah, I can see why you would go with Tiger. The "Ayrton Senna" of golf. Gifted, brilliant, and the leader in his craft. And thoroughly derserving of all the accolades.
I still have a sweet spot for the 'Shark' though. Whatever he is as a human being, and whatever his score-book says when he goes to higher-ground, he still helped to put us 'hick' Aussies on the map.
And he can still whack a ball better than I ever will. Go Greggy... :)

Tiger, definitely Tiger for me.
Having followed him around the NZ Open I was blown away by his absolute focus and humility. His swing was beautiful, he reminded me of a dancer, and his clubs were extensions of his arms. He played like rubbish for him and he was still a wonder to behold. Craig Parry (another great Aussie golfer) won the tournament.
The Shark with his uber yacht is not in the same class.
Props also to Michael Campbell, the most successful Maori sportman ever! A hero, regardless if he ever wins again.

Posted by: gogolf at October 13, 2008 8:24 PM - Well, it's probably a good thing we don't all measure things by your standards. If that were the case, why would anyone bother with sport in the first place? I mean, if you can't be the best of the best, you're a nothing, right?
Posted by: heart2heart57 at October 16, 2008 7:12 PM
There are good professional golfers who have never won a major. There are good tennis players who have never won a slam. There are good actors who have never won an Oscar. There are good club golfers who have never won a championship. There are good cyclists who have never won a Tour de France. There are good athletes etc. who have never won an olympic or world gold medal. No doubt that these are all people who are fantastic at what they do. They are way above the average person. Do you think any of them would be happy to be known as the best in their sport that never won the big one? The best player to never win a major? I bet that was a title Mickelson couldn't wait to get rid of and I'm damn sure Sergio would love to. As for Montgomerie I would bet that he would trade many other tournament wins for a British Open. For the AFL followers, Geelong only lost two games in the last 50 games. Awesome team. But guess what, they lost the grand final! The major! While all the other wins were great they lost the one that counted. They were by far the best team of the 2008 but in years to come only the team that won the grand final will be remembered. Everyone remembers the majors. Be it slams, olympics, world cups whatever. I know Norman won two British Opens. I know Tiger has won every major more than once but its so many I don't know the exact no. I know that they have both won a lot of other tournaments but so have a lot of other sportsmen. They just don't get the tv coverage and have the high profile. There are the good, the great and the elite. The elite are the ones who can win world championships, olympic medals slams and majors. And the best of the elite are those who can do it again and again.

Go golf, I see you still have this thing about, you can only measure how good a golfer is by how many majors they have won. I'm going 2 bring up another name for you, Colin Montgomerie, now here is a man who is a fantastic golfer, who has achieved many a record in Europe, and in his home country and throughout the world will be remembered as one of the great golfers to have ever come out of Scotland, but has never won a major championship. Golfers must be judged on what they do in golf as a whole not just majors. Thanx kat, and i must say, you have gotta love ya "acca dacca", kids of 2day dont know what they are missing. And h2h, well summed up on the 13th. I think i'll have a go @ summing up. I judge all golfers for what they bring to the sport, not just how many majors they have won. The prime example that i can think of is Rocco Mediate. How much fun did that bloke have losing a US open. There the sort of blokes that golf should have more of.
Posted by: shedsy1969 at October 4, 2008 6:44 AM
have to agree with shedsy and h2h in that its too hard to compare two things/people 20 yrs apart. compare 2 today with each other & 2 from 20 yrs ago against each other
i was in the car before, out with my 13 yr old daughter. ac/dc's "jailbreak" comes on the radio....so here i go, turn it up louder, im singing the words at the top of my voice, facial expressions & all...."rifles.........firing......but he made it out........with a bullet in his back!" whilst telling my daughter how great the music was in my day....she says "OMG im so glad i wasnt born when you were!"
clearly she has no idea what shes talking about, lol, but she loves the stuff they play today, and i generally dont any more (with some exceptions) but love the older stuff. its kinda like comparing apples with oranges....

Posted by: gogolf at September 4, 2008 9:43 PM - In summing up GoGolf... both Tiger and Greg are incredibly gifted. Tiger has more 'runs on the board'. Granted. What was the 'Dons' batting average? 100? Or 99.98? Does it really matter? He was a craftsman at his sport. I think Greg was/still is too. Tiger goes without saying - records that may never be beaten. But most important of all - they are truly gifted sportsmen. Each and every one of them. If one of them has a 'bigger number' than the other, it shouldn't detract from their brilliance...

Golf is a game of "if only......". So Greg has won 80 tournaments, that is incredible. So if he can win so many tournaments why were only 2 of them majors??????
Posted by: gogolf at September 4, 2008 9:43 PM
Ah... shedsy... I see you have suffered at the hands of the 'one that got away' too :)
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 31, 2008 9:22 PM
I don't think you can just compare great golfers on how many majors that they win. You look back over time and see how many nobody golfers have won major titles, two British open champions from not that long ago come 2 mind, "Ben Curtis & Todd Hamliton". I know they are still young in the golfing world, but if they win more than 10 tournaments in there careers i will go he.Greg won 80 tournaments world wide including 2 major titles. The 1 annoying thing with tiger these days is that he won't leave american shores for a golf tournament for anything less than 4million, (British open aside), He is not a great ad 4 world wide golf, Someone like Annika Sorenstam is a much better ad for world golf, cause she plays all over the world. And h2h, i'm with you, As all weekend hacks will tell you,(and even the best in the world), you could shoot a par round off a 10 hcp and miss a 3 footer on the last 2 shoot 1 under, it will b the last putt you blame 4 not shootin sub par, not the 1 that lipped out on the first.
Posted by: shedsy1969 at August 31, 2008 6:06 PM
I'd like to see you use that "you can't blame just 1 shot" line to a guy whose just lost a major in a sudden death play-off...
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 31, 2008 11:30 AM
Shedsy asked the question, what could Norman have done in his time with todays technology? Implying that he would have been even better. What I was trying to get at is that he wouldn't have been any better unless he was the only one that had the technology. Success at golf is measured by winning tournaments and ultimately the majors. Why do you think Norman only won two and neither of those in the US? And don't say he was unlucky because of 1 holed chip and bunker shot. There are 72 holes in a major and over 260+ shots played. You can't blame just 1 shot.
Posted by: gogolf at August 30, 2008 1:33 PM
I spose we could always compare the field of 'competitors' to which each has been exposed. Greg had some fearsome competitors to beat. You reckon Tiger has beaten better adversaries, or is he just the class-act these days - the leader of his field by a country mile?
Oh, and Fangio's contemparies in his day all had the same equipment too, so I'm not sure what you're getting at there...
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 29, 2008 7:35 PM
Hey shedsy and h2h. You can compare golfers 20 years apart because what they had to do then and still have to do now to win major tournaments was beat their contemporaries who were using exactly the same technology them at the time. There is no measurement of speed or distance for example that breaks world records in golf. I agree you couldn't compare swimmers for example. Who knows how fast Dawn Fraser could have swam with the swim suits they are wearing now? Tiger and Greg both competed and still compete against players using the same equipment as them. If anything the competition is harder for Tiger now because there are so many more players on tour and as you have pointed out Norman raised the level of golf so the players are better as well. Maybe if Norman had todays technology 20years ago and no-one else did he would have won a US major! It's the mental strength that makes Tiger a better competitor (notice I didn't say player) than Norman not the golf equipment.
Posted by: gogolf at August 28, 2008 10:06 PM
Yep - I'm with you there Shedsy. It's hard to compare Greats from 20 years apart. Or how many tournaments they've won etc. Tiger is more or less doing for the sport what Greg did back then. Best to leave it said that they were/are great golf players.
It's the same as trying to compare Fangio, with Senna, and Schumacher. All brilliant at their craft in their time with what they had. In motor racing, the younger and more recent champions always seem to acknowledge that what the forgone champs did with what they had demanded different levels of different skills. They always respect their forebears.
Greg did us proud and showed the world that we're not a just bunch of kangaroo-punching hicks. He also played some pretty darn good golf. I've said it before that I think Tiger is more gifted, more natural at what he does. Greg had to do it the hard way. And at the end of the day, they are both brilliant at what they do...
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 28, 2008 8:52 PM
I think it is very hard 2 compare two golfers from 2 different generations. Could anyone tell me how tiger would have gone 20 years ago with the clubs that the shark had 2 play with. Golf technology over the last twenty years has come a long way. Has anyone tried 2 hit a club that is 20 or 30 years old, with 1 of those shitty old golf balls that they had 2 use. I think they are both great champions of there era. TRD12; Wouldn't we all love 2 have our sons, (or in my case, daughters), b the next big things in world golf, so we can travel the world and watch and play golf every week. The thought is just 2 good 2 b true.
Posted by: shedsy1969 at August 28, 2008 11:54 AM
Haha no that doesnt make you an aussie traitor gogolf. It should be remembered however that Tiger and the others wouldnt be playing for anything like they are now without the Shark, Hopefully my son can become the next Shark, then I can retire peacefully and play golf for the rest of my life lol. Nice thought that!!!
Posted by: therealdeal12 at August 28, 2008 9:16 AM
Norman has been a fantastic ambassador for Australian golf and moved golf in general up a level with his physical fitness but there is no question that Tiger far out does Norman as a player and it is nothing to do with age. The facts speak for themself. How many majors has each of them won and at what age? I have no doubt that if Tiger is still playing at 53 that he will do equally as well if not better than Norman. He has broken just about every other record so what not the oldest played to win a major. Norman may have won a lot of tournaments but he did not have the mental strength to win the US majors. Tiger has done that. I can't see him losing at Augusta with a 7 shot lead on Sunday! I believe all pros at that level can hit the ball as good as each other, it's the ones who can hold it together it mentally that win the money. Norman could do it to a point but Tiger can just do it. Ask Nike ha ha. I am not an Aussie traitor just a realist.
Posted by: gogolf at August 27, 2008 8:04 PM
Yep TRD2 - Greg was awesome. Still is. I think I mentioned somewhere before that us Ozzies (or at least our media) love to chop down tall poppies. I think Tiger may be more naturally gifted, whereas Greg has always had to work hard at it and fight some inner demons to get to where he got.
Both of them are brilliant at their craft. And anyone who plays the sport and has been to watch a tournament usually just stands there with their mouth open wide gazing at the little white ball as it leaves the tee-block and soares towards the Heavens. Pure poetry in motion...
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 23, 2008 7:11 PM
Tiger of Greg. This is not even a question is it? As Aussies, we have to say Greg. The man is awesome and I wish I had just a little of his self confidence. Sadly too many people take it as arrogance. I love the man!!!!
Posted by: therealdeal12 at August 23, 2008 6:05 PM
First time I asked my husband to show me how to play golf,he took me to the golf course across the road and said aim over there and I hit a hole in one and he refused to play with me again. Both gone our separate ways and I play golf once a week but find some arrogant men assume all women are slow and want to go ahead of us.A man was rude to us and I called him "an arrogant p- - - k" and he had the good grace to apologise to us.So gentlemen ask nicely and you'd be surprised what you will get!
Posted by: aries8 at August 16, 2008 5:03 PM
I have to laugh. My puter room window overlooks a golf course - an they're at it again. Whacking those poor defenceless balls with a metal stick.
The tee-block for the second hole is directly opposite, and obscured by trees and shrubs. You can often see a ball being fired out down the fairway. Often followed by a muffled (or not so muffled) F**K! Occasionally, this is accompanied by a shiny metal shaft slowly cartwheeling through the air - often further than the ball itself. Gorgeous.
I used to play a bit of golf years ago, and my parents were mad for. They'd be getting up in the dark and heading down to Flinders, out to Lang Lang, and all over the place. It was a complete days entertainment. Socialising with others, picnicing or going out to lunch afterwards. Or just having a hot pie and a can of coke.
It's one of those sports you can take way seriously, or just participate in to be amongst friends. The banter I hear coming from the tee-block is often quite amusing. More so in the summer months - a couple of mates having a beer after work. Belting a ball and having a laugh. Priceless...

Posted by: amberlight58 at August 15, 2008 10:22 AM
The whole 6 or 7 times I went to that driving range, not once did I see that ball-picker-upperer. They must have been forewarned that it was my day to thrash. But hey, if it were there doing it's job I would have had a go at it too - give me something to aim for :).....now looking around desperately for my fallen halo
Posted by: egernia at August 14, 2008 12:29 PM
Yeh... well... it started out as a 'typo', but I kinda liked it, so I left it as is EG. Glad you like it too :) Driving ranges are fun - you ever aim for the clutz driving that ball-picker-upperer machine around? Talk about laugh. All of a sudden, you see everyone adjust there stance, an all these balls start 'accidentally' falling all around the poor dude... LoL But I'd *never* do anything like that - nuh-uh. Not me...(polishes halo)...
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 13, 2008 7:05 PM
Energina? Full points for that one H2H. I like it. Of course it was on the Wii. I've played mini golf for fun but I much preferred the local driving range. The aim was to hit that ball as hard and as far as I could. An ex bf showed me how to stand and swing, he was an excellent hack!
Posted by: egernia at August 13, 2008 9:08 AM
On the Wii... or on the course Energina?
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 12, 2008 9:09 PM
I'm pleased you enjoyed a lol moment. After some refinement, less laughter & more patience I managed to reduced that score of 32 down to a bogie on that Par 5 hole.
Posted by: egernia at August 12, 2008 8:35 AM
Sounds like a good idea to me too, Amber. Sit in a nice warm 19th, crackling fire nearby, sipping on something from a clear glass, watching the 'hacks' chase a little while ball around in the rain. Hit it. Run up to it. Hit it again. Then try to lose it down a hole. Yup, watching that has to be the most fun you can have without laughing. Just the thing to do in the 19th :)
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 12, 2008 12:47 AM
Yeah egernia,
About as good as my golf debut!
Sounds like the "19th hole" is the only place where we should hang out! Before, during and after the game!

32 on FIVE par 5's isn't all that flash. lmao :)
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 11, 2008 6:05 PM
I was having a go at the golf on the Wii Sport. After figuring out that I could make allowances for the wind speed/direction before 'hitting' the ball, I actually did alright. I scored 32 on a par 5. That's good, isnt it?
Posted by: egernia at August 11, 2008 3:28 PM
Stuart - they should make it allowable to shoot the ball if it doesn't go where you want it to... LoL :)
Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 10, 2008 6:08 PM
I was going to go and play golf today but the weather was awful!
I love the game and even have my own fairway and green on my little property.
I find it very mind clearing and relaxing, I always get the best results when I paly with that thinking rather than trying to outdo Tiger, or even my Dad....
Posted by: creativestuart at August 10, 2008 5:37 PM
Nope - more likely holding up a corner of the '19th' hole somwhere...
(for non-golfers - the 19th hole = the bar)

It is strongly recommended that golfers do not lick their own balls on the green. Due to the chemical compounds in the fertilizer.
Posted by: tassiedude1 at August 6, 2008 10:21 PM
Yes Perth,
Sadly I also have no talent at all for golf. That ball is just too small!
When I was pregant with my oldest child, I went and played a few holes of golf. I was so bad that I was made special mention of in the clubrooms, for hitting the most strokes to finally finish the 18th hole or something!
I went into labour that night and my son was born the next evening.
Would like to say it was my pregnant belly that caused me to miss the ball, but sadly that was not the case!
I tried later and was just as bad!
I am sure even lessons from Tiger Woods would never turn me into a golfer!
Posted by: amberlight58 at August 6, 2008 9:31 PM
I rather like the VW Golf, but that's about as close as I get I'm afraid. Cannot even begin to understand how the pros can hit that little white ball so close to their target at times. Pretty amazing stuff really. I read somewhere that the top players train 6-8 hours a day, amazing stuff such dedication.

Oh, NOW I get it! Some of the new blog topics (and aren't there a lot of them?) are related to the new (well, new to me, I only discovered them today) innovation of 'communities' that RSVP has come up with. Now it makes sense. Good idea RSVP. But maybe the new topics could be linked only to the communities so they don't 'clog up' the more general blogs. It gets a little overwhelming and confusing when there are so many new blog topics.

Posted by: amberlight58 at August 1, 2008 9:46 AM - I have a few suggestions Amber. How about "I have trouble with dirty balls", or "I can get it up there, but it just won't find the hole". A tad risque perhaps? ~S~ Ok then, what about "Going for an Eagle - looking like a Turkey"?
Re Greg - I have no idea why everyone puts him down all the time. Tall-Poppy syndrome perhaps? The guys won two Brit opens, and gave them a run for their money just the other week at 60 years of age, yet everyone is STILL bagging him (no pun intended). He'll still play better when he's 90 than I ever will, so I can respect him for his skill. And after is all said and done, what would be the most popular answer if someone said "name an Australian golfer"? He's copped his fair share of flak in the past, but I reckon he's always maintained his dignity. That's good enough for me.
Golf, you learn to love to hate it *mongrelgamemuttermuttermutter*...

Having said all that if you have ever tried to hit a golf ball then surly you must appreciate the skill level of some of these professional golfers. To do it consistently over a four day period must take the utmost dedication and extreme mental ability only aspired to by most of the worlds elite sports men and women.
