What's your ultimate breakup song?

piano_man.jpg

Yes, we all have a favourite. Don't deny your unyielding need to listen to that atrociously depressing song the minute your relationship has broken. Depending on the direction your relationship eventually took, you may be more inclined to listen to Stevie Nicks call out the cathartic words "you can go your own way". Perhaps your tastes veer to an angry Alanis number?

Are you guilty of dusting off your Whitney record for a tear-jerker to really dry your eyes out? Or, do you prefer to empower yourself Gaynor style with an "I will survive" attitude? Whether you're missing someone like the Stones or wanting someone back like the Jackson Five, tell us about your favourites!

Not really into the break up song thing, but i must admit the song that I played to death after a major break up was Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes... don't ask me why, i just love the Lyrics

I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long.
Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.
So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed.
And in the personals column, there was this letter I read:

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."

I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean.
But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine.
So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad.
And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad.

"Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape.
At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..

"That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."

Hi to everyone, I don't know why I can't get this to format correctly so I'm going to post it as is. Sorry if it's a bit hard to read.

1000 Times Goodbye - Megadeth:

The tides of change pulled us apart
I feel a familiar pain
It seems like years since we've loved
Or even liked and that's a lonely way to be

Drifting alone in a sea of agony
Your face I cant recognize
Don't make this hard on us
I will miss you if you just go away

I did no right you did no wrong
Nothing left but wasted days
I regret you leaving
But I will never take you back

What she is saying to him over the phone...

You know what? its over
I just don't feel the same way as I used to
We've been together forever, but its over

Chorus...

Goodbye 1000 times goodbye
The thought never crossed my mind
That this would be my last goodbye
Let me put pennies on your eyes
And kiss your lips one last goodbye
My love 1000 times goodbye

Do a search if you'd like to know how it end.. Hope you like it, my first post and it seems so appropriate given how I got here.

"It Ends Tonight" by ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS

"A falling star
Least I fall alone.
I can't explain what you can't explain.
You're finding things that you didn't know
I look at you with such disdain

The walls start breathing
My mind's unweaving
Maybe it's best you leave me alone.
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow.

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight.
Just a little insight won't make this right
It's too late to fight
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight."

From a seed somebody else has sown
Go on ahead and sow some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie the reason you were alive
But you'll never know."

drunk again by reel big fish

"If I had a dollar bill for every time I’ve been wrong,
I’d be a self-made millionaire and you’d still be gone.
So hand me down my best dress shoes and my best dress shirt,
Cause I’m going out in style to cover the hurt.
And all I wanna do all day is spend it in bed
But that’s bad for the body and even worse for my head,
So I’ll try and find a place where no one will ask me a thing,
It’ll help to forget and help me to sing"

I love the song 'Cry me a river' but Dianna Kralls version is not a patch on the Julie London one....Dianna sounds like a drunk in comparison....However my all time favourite version is the one done by Crystal Gayle....pity it does not appear to be on youtube. I have a copy, it was on one of the albums that had 'Don't it Make your brown eyes blue' on it...a classic from Crystal.

Right now, its 'Warwick Avenue' by Duffy. She has such a soulful voice, and her lyrics are touching. They say in order to write a truly inspiring song about being broken hearted, you need to have personally had the experience - and im sure she has..

go download it or have a look on www.youtube.com - if you like amy winehouse you will LOVE Duffy.

my old favorite breakup song is DONT FORGET TO REMEMBER ME by the bee gees. its a real tearjerker, but then most of todays hits are about love and broken hearts.after ive had a good cry, i play ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST by queen, that always makes me feel better.

Posted by: sooty62 at September 24, 2008 5:40 PM

I don't think anything beats Sinead O'Conner for sheer tear jerking quality, if it's one of THOSE breakups (You know the ones I'm talking about...ten boxes of kleenex and a tub of chocolate chip ice-cream).
But for the angry, I'm moving on sort of thing, I've been prone to belt out Cher's 'Believe' and 'Strong Enough'....and Greendays 'F.O.D' is rather empowering.

Posted by: marybel08 at September 24, 2008 9:27 AM

A little time - the beautifu south
the flame - cheap trick
ciao ! - lush

Well, I've felt better since I slammed that door
You always cramped my style, I never noticed before
It's been a non-stop party since I flew the coop
I can't believe I fell for such a loser like you

And if you feel like crying, almost any carpenters song.

There's certainly no shortage of great breakup songs out there... I Want You by Elvis Costello, The Last Polka by Ben Folds Five (Song for the Dumped is good too), Don't Renege On Our Love, For Shame of Doing Wrong, When the Spell Is Broken and so on by Richard Thompson, pretty much everything by Peter Hammill: If I Could, Just Good Friends, Too Many of My Yesterdays, Other Old Cliches, the list just goes on and on, but the ultimate breakup song must be Keeping Your Poop (In A Jar) by Hayseed Dixie!

"I'm keeping your poop in a jar, till the day you come back
So I dont forget just what you are,
Yeah I'm keepin' your poop in a jar..."

The 10 best break-up songs are all on "Blood on the Tracks" by Bob Dylan. It's a bit like "Hamlet", there's simply too many good lines to recite them all. But some favourites include:

"Like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your lips
I like the cool way you look at me
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery"

"And if I pass this way again
You can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her
On that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death
And men who are fighting to keep warm
Come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm"

"She might think that I've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so"

"Purple clover, Queen Anne's lace
Crimson hair across your face
You could make me cry if you don't know
Can't remember what I was thinking of
You might be spoiling me too much, love
Your gonna make me lonesome when you go"

"People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin but I lost the ring
She was born in Spring but I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate"

The list goes on...

All votes for "I'll be Back" by the Beatles, another Dylan - "Sooner or Later (One of Us Must Know)" and "Here Comes Those Tears Again" by Jackson Browne will be duly entertained.

Check out "Ephemera" by William Butler Yeats too.

Morning all inner DJs I am posting this with the hope it shall make you all smile and get posted as it is sooo funny :-)\xx

Little boy you look so clear around the eyes, what they have in store for you - you may not realise.

So be careful when you hear the voices call...watch out little boy don't lose your balls..

You never know the rules until you play, first they stroke and then screw you and try to take your balls away....

And once they've gone they are way beyond recall....watch out little boy dont lose your balls...

Balls run wild, get out of line, you may not even know you left your balls behind..

You know money only buys you what you want, you can't buy your balls back like you buy a pair of pants.

Once they are gone youve really got $%^K all,,,,watch out little boy dont lose your balls.

Peace out xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Secret O Life, by James Taylor is a simple yet clear song........

The secret o life is enjoying the passage of time....
There aint nothing to it...

Einstein said he could never understand it all...
.Planets spinning through space.....
Welcome to the human race....
Isn't it a lovely ride.........

Simple and clear....enjoy life...............K

Matt Handley's (ex-pollyanna, for those in the know) entire album, Didn't Feel A Thing, really hits the nail on the head, examaning the different fealings that both sides have during a break-up, but for a single song, I would choose You're Rubbing Me Out....I think the title speaks for itself. Basically is about the final days of a relationship, when you know things are falling apart, but love is keeping you around...or something like that!

Posted by: sdave at September 2, 2008 4:37 PM

Lover, you should've come over - Jeff Buckley.

So beautifully haunting! It's great for the initial pain and to get it all out of your system.

Then kick yourself back into the swing with an upbeat tune...anything that gets you up and shaing your booty again!

Posted by: marylulu at August 30, 2008 12:41 PM I agree with the look forward philosophy, If the break up is that bad, you're going to have it on your mind enough without focusing on it............ a couple of happy hopeful songs, Beattles Here comes the sun.......... and a fave, Deadstar "Deeper Water", which I heard the lead singer describe as "unashamedly happy" (love the expression)...... can't help but feel better after a good blast of that.....as always, just a thought FTAMOS

Crying/screaming songs ....ohhh yes ...

All by myself - Eric Carmen (from the Diary of Bridget Jones)...

Didn't we almost have it all - Whitney Houston

You were meant for me - Jewel

But I have learnt give grief it's time and then be done with it ....look instead for songs full of hope and joy.

We get back what we give out, we make more of what we listen to ...

I used to reach for Barry Manilow's Weekend In New England, but I realised ages ago that it just makes you sink in it further. I now reach for uplifting songs Like Steve Winwood's Back in the High Life or Cheap Trick's Mighty Wings or even Kenny Loggins Danger Zone. Cumon guys and Gals onwards and upwards..... Cheers

Hi everyone,

Thought I would add my favourite breakup song, by the The Streets, if you don't know it, English rap......

Dry Your eyes

In one single moment your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute starin straight at the ground
Lookin' to the left slightly, then tookin' back down

World feels like it's caved in - proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be, for us
I can change and I can grow or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship., if you must
I look at her she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she's lookin' straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she's lookin' down at her feet

Dry you eyes mate
I know it's hard but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now
It's over.

Couple more verses...but if you are interests you can google it...

It's really interesting to look at peoples different reactions and types of music for breakups...I think it depends a lot on how the breakup occured, whether its depression, anger etc
But as a troubled teen I poured a lot of emotion into Barnesy and Chisel, so they're oddly favourites, BFF Song For The Dumped is a great uplifting song to scream to, but if I'm already thoroughly depressed, then honestly metal puts a smile on my face - particularly thrash metal, any given band.
After a particularly bad breakup, I developed whole playlists devoted to depression, but eventually learned that reliving it over and over won't make the pain any easier to bear.

Posted by: pat86 at August 28, 2008 7:17 PM

Just thinking - why on a dating site where we are trying to find someone to begin a relationship with is the music blog topic about songs focused on ending relationships. Hmm

Posted by: takeachancetoday at August 27, 2008 10:27 AM

Looking at the comments posted there are obviously lots of 'ultimate breakup songs.' One of mine I suppose would have to be "The Day You Went Away" written by Johathon Male and sung by Wendy Mathews. I must admit however I would rather go see a sad movie and have a good howl. Then listen to music that frees me from the pain.

"Now I've got a heavy heart" by "You Am I", fantastic in it's imagery of post break-up hopelessness, and "The Verve" "Drugs don't work" speaks for itself. Also agree with previous posting for Ben Folds "Song for the dumped"; hurt, anger and retribution.

Posted by: unjaded at August 25, 2008 8:38 PM

Honestly...its Ben Folds paying out Alanis Morriset big time with extra interest..."Song for the Dumped"...not sure if our moderator will permit the lyrics, but sung with such passion!

"So you wanted

to take a break

Slow it down some and

have some space

Well fuck you too

Give me my money back

Give me my money back

you bitch

I want my money back

(And don't forget to give

me back my black T-Shirt)

Wish I hadn't bought you dinner

Right before you dumped me

on your front porch

Give me my money back

Give me my money back

You bitch

I want my money back

and don't forget

And don't forget my black T-shirt".

Talk about Rage against the machine!!

Don Henley and Patti Smith's cover of "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" is a good tear-jerker too. It's more of a 'pre-breakup' song than an actual break-up song per se. The words are quite powerful and poignant - sometimes, strange as it may seem, love is not enough...

"I Hope You Die" works for me :)))
Cheesed off would be a little bit of an understatement !! But its all water under the bridge and long washed away - at the time it hurt like hell !
I dont actually like listening to songs about breakups/heartaches - too introspective and melancholy.

Posted by: jenjen57 at August 23, 2008 1:43 PM

How about "I Hope You Die" by The Bloodhound Gang? Not a really serious one, of course, but if someone has done the dirty on you and you're cheesed off with them, that one will bring a smile to your face.

Either that or Hinder's "Better Than Me".

Posted by: wraecca at August 23, 2008 12:47 PM

I have a couple:

Dresden Dolls "Truce" and "The Jeep Song", Foo fighters "All My Life" and "Let It Die" and finally NIN "Ruiner"

Don Henley sure knows how to write a song!
The Heart Of The Matter is one of his best, as is New York Minute (not a breakup song but good anyway).

Here Come Those Tears Again by Jackson Browne.
Here come those tears again
Just when l was getting over you
Just when l was gonna make it through another night
Without missing you.....

Thinking l might just be strong enough after all....
Then l hear your footsteps echoing in the hall.

Well l don't know if l can
Open up and let you in baby
Here come those tears,
Here come those tears again.

And his Late For The Sky album, written after his wife Phyllis committed suicide in the early seventies, is a melancholy study of despair..... but strangely listenable.....................K

Two from Manchester for you that neatly encapsulate the swagger and bluster you try to internalise and make it feel like it doesn't actually matter that much:

Stone Roses, I am the Resurrection

"I am the Resurrection and I am the light, I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like"

Charlatans, Then

"You, you are nothing next to me - I, am a Northerner you see. You're curious, I'm glorious, you never hurt me that much"

Nothing Else Matters.......

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for things they say
Never cared for games they play
I'd never cared for what they do
I'd never cared for what they know
And I know

Yeah!

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
And nothing else matters

Jame's Blunt's song "Goodbye my Lover" very beautiful, I think the album was back to Bedlam, or something like that.

Posted by: bornfreeandmusical at August 22, 2008 9:09 PM

It would have to be...

"The Breakup Song" by The Greg Kihn Band

Posted by: eightiesguru at August 22, 2008 6:45 PM

Posted by: choonz at August 20, 2008 11:57 PM - Not the most patronising song I've ever heard... LoL

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 21, 2008 9:01 PM

I have heaps... best would have to be "See you Dead" - Helmet

"I could miss you more right....
Or i could slit your throat"

Bit sadistic, but fitting most of the time right?! lol

Posted by: choonz at August 20, 2008 11:57 PM

I think its gotta be "Song for the dumped" by Ben Folds! So good to hear the rage...no pussy-footing around politeness or heart-torn partings here. The last line says it all..."and don't forget my black T-shirt". All good fun, tongue-in-cheek, of course, and set to a great beat!

Hey,
+1 for 'Heart of the Matter'
Actually anything by the eagles is good too
I also like "Wasted time" from their Hell freezes over dvd
infact I might go fish it out of the pile and have a watch heheh

Love Will Tear Us Apart..Joy Division
"Will You"...Hazel O Connor
"Nothing Compares To You"....Sinead O Connor ( that video, the shaved head and those tears!)
"Dance Away" .. Roxy Music
"If You Leave" and "Was It Something I Said"..Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark

Posted by: peregrino02 at August 18, 2008 10:48 PM

The best EVER lyrics for a break up song is "The Heart Of The Matter" by Don Henley. He sang it at the Hell Freezes Over concert here..
"I got the call babe, I didn't wannna hear
But I knew that it would come
An old true friend of ours was talking on the phone
She said you'd found someone
And I thought of all the bad luck
And the struggles we went through
And how I lost me and you lost you...."

By now you should download and listen..and maybe agree with me?

'Seein Red' by Unwritten Law, for sure. Got it all in there. Seen em again just this weekend and they played it, couldn't help but think "U bitch". Ha Ha

Yes, I did like it. I really liked their use of timpani, which for some reason I find exciting (and I hope not too strange, lol).

Best breakup song ever is Caught Out There by Kelis.

Not so good if you broke on good terms...

Did you like it willow? Just realised that this particular album is about death, yet I think it is their most upbeat so far???? The music is uplifting and encompasses so many genres. I didn't realise that my taste in music is somewhat obscure till my sister in law told me that Placebo are very dark and despairing...I adore their music and am coming to terms with the fact that I am attracted to the dark side, I guess. They tellme that Silverchair are depressing as well...I don't think so at all...
Cheers,

Has anyone listened to the new Coldplay album, Viva la Vida.....nothing to do with breaking up, but an absolutely unbelievably excellent cd...and I wasn't a Coldplay fan before, in fact I thought they were maudlin, but this album is mind blowing.

"The Way You Look Tonight" sung by Tony Bennett. An oldie but a beauty, l love Tony Bennett's voice and style. When he sang with kd lang it was beautiful...............K

Belaus - I've been singing that song every night for the last week, walking down the river with my dogs. Hopefully no-one's heard me :)

Posted by: willow29 at August 16, 2008 11:26 AM

Ditto on Joni Mitchell there Belaus. It was covered in the film 'Swtich' (Ellen Barkin, Jimmy Smits). Sure brought tears to my eyes when it started playing at the end of the final scene. I liked it so much, I got the lyrics. Some really tender and powerful stuff in there. And the quality of her voice. Still makes the eyes leak to this day...

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 16, 2008 10:48 AM

Joni Mitchell classic Both sides. The Lyrics are powerful..and with her powerful voice just brings tears to my eyes. Either a good or bad break up experince..

I would have to say "Last Goodbye" of the Jeff Buckley album Grace.

This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know

Powerful, poetic, and beautifully sung

In 2003, it was covered by Natalie Cole for a tribute CD to Patsy Cline. " Crazy" (written by Willie Nelson) has been covered by various artists like Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers and many more....

There was also a movie about her life titled " Sweet Dreams" Patsy Cline was played by Jessica Lange

Posted by: forevernow1 at August 15, 2008 8:35 AM

Um... isn't "Crazy" originally a Patsy Cline song? (tragic life she led, by the way).

There's sooo many songs out there that can epitomise our lives and emotions. Abba did some sensational stuff, even though it was sold in a 'pop bubble-gum wrapper'.

That's the beauty of music. It can invoke so many emotions. And when artists match the lyrics with the mood of the melody, "special" songs that live in our hearts and memories forever are created...

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 15, 2008 1:29 AM

To steal a line of Molly " Do yourself a favour and buy Vanessa Amorosis new cd
Somewhere in the real world". The chick rocks and rocks even covers some acadaca live at her show.
Saw her at the Doyalson a few weeks back she has to be the best person I have ever seen live. Rock on

Following the suggestions here I have downloaded Neil Diamond's 'Love on the rocks' and the song "Cry"...thank you for suggestions, I think these songs are absolutely beautiful! I like the music and the lyrics as well...I have also downloaded a Pink Floyd song called"High Hopes". I have seen it on DVD - with all those fanthastic sound and light effects and I got addicted to it! By the way,I always liked Abba's "The winner takes it all' also Norah Jones "Crazy"
(I find the music absolutely beautiful)
Crazy

Crazy, crazy for feeling so lonely
I'm crazy, crazy for feeling so blue
I know, that love me as long as you want it
and inside I know you would leave me for somebody new
Worry, why do I let myself worry
Wondering, what in the world did I do?

Crazy, of thinking that my love could hold you
Oh I'm crazy for trying
and crazy for crying
and I'm crazy for loving you

solo

Worry, why do I let myself worry
Wondering, what in the world did I do?
Crazy, of thinking that my love could hold you
Ohoh I'm crazy for trying,
and I'm crazy for crying
and I'm crazy for loving you

...One of my other favourites is "One million years' from Robin Gibb :

I'm dead my life's been sold

all my years are cold

no trees to hide my head

all my roads are red

and in the Easter
I will see that same old sun that shone

and in the winter
I will stand in seas of snow alone

I will wait for you yeah !
Your eyes will shine like dew.
Yeah ! I close my eyes and you're now here.
And I'll wait for you

for one million years !

I'm face has long been wet

ever since we met

Coldplay.....sedate.....yeah l would agree with that at times BM, l have just replaced my copy of X&Y and have had the second of A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which l love to listen to, for a while now. Clocks. Great song, an easy piano tune to play. A lot of their songs are quite atmospheric l think.....................K

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 12, 2008 9:13 PM

I reckon I should have an album review column somewhere...been playing the new Coldplay album recently.....I found the previous 2 somewhat sedate and even maudlin, yet this new one, Viva la vida, is energetic and very exciting and at times it totally brilliant....in my opinion only ofcourse.
I speak from how it affects me and how it makes me feel.

The Heart You Break May Be Your Own

By : Patsy Cline

You think you're smart, you broke my heart,
Left me to cry alone.
But you'll return ~ one day you'll learn
The heart you break may be your own.
You promised me your love would be
A kind I'd never known,
Though you weren't fair, you're unaware
The heart you break may be your own.
You used my heart for a plaything,
You'll be sorry, just wait and see!
One day, you'll find you are lonely
And the first one you'll think of is me.
You'll look around, and when you've found
That you are all alone,
Then you'll get wise and realize
The heart you break may be your own.
You used my heart for a plaything,
You'll be sorry, just wait and see!
One day, you'll find you are lonely
And the first one you'll think of is me.
You'll look around, and when you've found
That you are all alone,
Then you'll get wise and realize
The heart you break may be your own.

This one is for woodnwine,
This song sounds a bit like you have described some of your relationships :)

LOVE ON THE ROCKS
Written by Neil Diamond and Gilbert Becaud

Love on the rocks
Ain't no surprise
Pour me a drink
And I'll tell you some lies
Got nothin' to lose
So you just sing the blues all the time

Gave you my heart
Gave you my soul
You left me alone here
With nothing to hold
Yesterday's gone
Now all I want is a smile

First, they say they want you
How they really need you
Suddenly you find you're out there
Walking in a storm
When they know they have you
Then they really have you
Nothing you can do or say
You've got to leave, just get away
We all know the song

You need what you need
You can say what you want
Not much you can do
When the feeling is gone
May be blue skies above
But it's cold when you love's on the rocks

First, they say they want you
How they really need you
Suddenly you find you're out there
Walking in a storm
When they know they have you
Then they really have you
Nothing you can do or say
You've got to leave, just get away
We all know the song

Love on the rocks
Ain't no surprise
Pour me a drink
And I'll tell you some lies
Yesterday's gone
And now all I want is a smile

I would have to say Jim Croce would had to have written the best break up songs. He had some amazing lyrics, he must of felt some pain, even though he was happily married. The one that stands out in my mind Lovers Cross if your doing the breaking up. If you don't know him check him out. He also did Operator.

GUESS THAT IT WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN; WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME

BUT NOW I'VE COME TO MY DECISION, AND IT'S A ONE OF THE PAINFUL KIND

'CAUSE NOW IT SEEMS THAT YOU WANTED A MARTYR,

JUST A REGULAR GUY WOULDN'T DO

BUT BABY, I CAN'T HANG UPON NO LOVER'S CROSS FOR YOU.

YES I REALLY GOT TO HAND IT TO YOU, 'CAUSE GIRL, YOU REALLY TRIED

BUT FOR EVERY TIME THAT WE SPENT LAUGHIN'

THERE WERE TWO TIMES THAT I CRIED.

AND YOU WERE TRYING TO MAKE ME YOUR MARTYR

AND THAT'S THE ONE THING I JUST COULDN'T DO

'CAUSE BABY, I CAN'T HANG UPON NO LOVER'S CROSS FOR YOU.

'CAUSE TABLES ARE MEANT FOR TURNIN',

AND PEOPLE ARE BOUND TO CHANGE

AND BRIDGES ARE MEANT FOR BURNIN',

WHEN THE PEOPLE AND MEMORIES THEY JUST AREN'T THE SAME

SO I'LL HOPE THAT YOU CAN FIND ANOTHER WHO CAN TAKE WHAT I COULD NOT

HE'LL HAVE TO BE A SUPER GUY OR MAYBE A SUPER GOD

'CAUSE I NEVER WAS MUCH OF A MARTYR BEFORE

AND I AIN'T 'BOUT TO START NOTHIN' NEW

AND BABY, I CAN'T HANG UPON NO LOVER'S CROSS FOR YOU.

heart2heart ~ I agree with you about it being therapeutic to write. I do heaps of it, not necessarily in this format. Can't give too much away about myself in an open blog.
Sometimes I wonder about the value of it here, because of things that have happened, and I'm not just talking about the multi-profiler. Sometimes the nastiness astounds me. It's all very well to have differing opinions about things, but it's all in the way of expressing it.
Thankfully, there are some absolutely wonderful people who blog here, and it's a great learning curve for heaps of us I guess.
My mind has been changed on things through those sharing, and that's a good thing. There are definitely shades of grey in life.
I'm one of the philosophy that we continue to learn the whole of our life. And that is why I so love sharing and hearing about others lives. I like to feel that a lot of us here are kindred spirits. We actually do care about each other. And often in a very deep way. (You guys know who you are to me.) And you know what? I haven't even met some of them, and probably don't even need to. I feel safe and enveloped in a care that is hard to describe. But it is there. No question.
Geez, I am babbling on arn't I. Guess so much has happened just recently, that it is perhaps my turn to release a bit of it.

Anyway, do hope you've had a good night out. Music is so wonderful. I so agree with you. I'll have mine on tonight, as I continue to process stuff within me.

Jen

Posted by: jenniferhi at August 2, 2008 7:32 PM

Jen - those feelings you mentioned are always with me, and not a by-product of joining the Blogs. But I do find it mildly therapeutic to express myself in writing. Sometimes I write this stuff for me more than anyone else LoL. I guess it's a way of venting, cleansing, expressing. It's kinda like looking in a mirror when your own words stare back at you. My mind, heart, body, and soul are often all over the place, but I have learnt to accept that this is who I am; how I am.

Music plays an enormous part in my life. I have several guitars and drumsets, and I have used music to soothe myself, or lift myself, or be just darn happy by playing it, or listening to it.

Break-up songs have their own bitter-sweet edge to them. They can hurt like hell, but they can also trigger the recollection of the beautiful and magical times you spent together too. Pain and love are both feelings - the pain one we could probably do with less of, but it's one of the most important ones too. It helps to keep things in check sometimes. Oh Gawd, I'm waffling again . Suffice to say music can have a pretty powerful pull on us...

June, if you have a computer with a sound card and a cassette player, you can probably burn your songs to disc. It will take time, as you have to 'digitize' them into MP3 or WAV files etc in 'real time' - i.e. you have to play them to your computer for them to be changed from analogue to digital format. A 5 minute song will take 5 minutes to record initially - once you've done that, the MP3 etc that is produced is just another computer file, and can be copied to an iPod, ad CD for the car etc in the time it takes to burn it to disc.

But don't expect great quality - going from an analogue cassette recording to a computer digital file will mean some loss in quality - sound a bit muffled etc. But what the heck, if they're your favourite songs, it might just be worth it.

A cable from the 'audio out' on your cassette player to the 'audio in' on your computers sound card should do the trick. You'll need an 'audio grabber' program - easy enough to find on the net. Windows Media Player and other Windows stuff work, but from memory, they have a 2 minute limit on recording time, which isn't much good. Just have a bit of a look around to see that will do the job for you. Then all you have to do is play the song on the cassette deck, while turning on the computers 'recorder'. Like I said, the results won't be stunning, but at least to can pop them on to a CD or a music player...

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 2, 2008 11:09 AM

H2H, that is so perceptive and true about why we all like songs and music, for all the important and fun...sometimes not so fun times in our lives.
I am now wondering if there is a way tio get all my old cassettes burned onto dsks...like an easy way...or do I have to look for all my fav's in Sanity now to get them replaced...could cost a bit...but I need my car music...you know all the stuff you sing a long to when no one can hear you...plus it keeps you awake when driving...
Have a lovely saturday all...jewels

Posted by: junebaby57 at August 2, 2008 8:19 AM

heart2heart ~ it seems since you joined the blogs, you have started doing a lot of thinking about the past and lots of feelings are coming to the surface. Thankyou for sharing your stuff. You have a great way with words and I for one like the way you express things and share with us.

2am. I was up at the same time reading and writing. Sometimes sleep just won't come when we have so much to think about and process.

Jen

Posted by: jenniferhi at August 2, 2008 8:18 AM

Sorry - didn't realise this was such a *serious* Blog. There's soooo many songs that mean so much to people after a break-up. The actual words of the song can be so inconsequential - it can have been being played on the radio at a poignant snap in time, bringing back memories of how you met, where you met. At a fine restaurant, walking on a path by a stream, or eating fish & chips by the beach. Watching a sunset together. Stopping the car in the middle of nowhere to take a pee-break. There are just so many 'little' moments in life that take you unawares. When you get to see 'the real you' (them) if you know what I mean.

If we look back through our memory photo's as we have bounced around on this place we call 'Earth'... there's always some weird, seemingly inconsequential moment that we remember our partner for. A dumb comment, a wry smile, or just the Hallelujah of having been with them when all around seemed simply magical. For most of us, there was probably a song quite nearby.

For me, there's certain songs that can take me back to the sight, the sound, the smell, and the very fabric of that moment. Even today. Music has this wonderful power.

Possibly one of the most powerful break-up songs of all time would be by the Righteous Brothers. Some younger ones might perhaps have heard it through Long John Baldry/Kathi McDonald - You've Lost That Loving Feeling. Perhaps not the break-up itself, but certainly that inevitable feeling that it's about to happen. That horrible horrible feeling you get when your gut suddenly realises that the shit has hit the fan. That it's about to end, and there's nothing, but NOTHING you can do about it. Their mind is made up, and there's no going back from here. You're helpless, and powerless to do anything about it.

There ain't nothing you can do. And you feel that sinking feeling. Your legs feel like both lead and jelly, your heart pounds, and your head spins. There's this rushing sound around your ears. You try to lie to yourself - it will be alright tomorrow. But you know it won't. And it's gonna hurt. Oh how you know it's gonna hurt. And, in the song, he knew how much it was going to hurt:

You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips.
And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips.
You're trying hard not to show it, (baby).
But baby, baby I know it...

She ain't coming back, mate....

Posted by: heart2heart57 at August 2, 2008 2:07 AM

Mine is "I Hope I Never" by Tim Finn. I hope I never have to see you again.....sort of sums it all up nicely doesn't it?

Posted by: mybio1 at August 2, 2008 1:41 AM

Dreams was Stevie Nicks' breakup song.
Go You Own Way was Lindsay Buckinghams. From the same album...after they broke up.

I can't get past Cat Stevens, The First Cut Is The Deepest. A man trying to explain that he may never be able to love again with the same passion of his first love.

It really rings true for me, as I think you are always more cautious if you have had your heart broken. Once bitten twice shy.

Note that this song was later butchered by Sheryl Crowe (or Shania Twain).

Posted by: musicfan111 at August 2, 2008 1:29 AM

I have always liked "My Favorite Mistake" by Sheryl Crow. It covers the whole range of emotions that you go through in a breakup...

This is one of those gems that always seems to help get things in perspective during "that time" For me its an eternal classic by a BAnd called A fine Frenzy song title "Almost Lover" Heres the Lyrics:

Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind
Images
You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes
Clever trick

Well, I never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me

[Chorus]
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

We walked along a crowded street
You took my hand and danced with me
Images
And when you left, you kissed my lips
You told me you would never, never forget
These images

No

Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me

[Chorus]
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind
So you're gone and I'm haunted
And I bet you are just fine

Did I make it that
Easy to walk right in and out
Of my life?

[Chorus]
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should have known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do

All i can say is listen to the song you'll get it! ;-)))))

"Sometimes the songs you love to listen to when you are in a relationship...or what you think of as "your" song...end up being the ultimate breakup songs."

I totally agree with this. This is what I've found to be the case, certainly. *sigh*

Posted by: gcrenaissance at July 31, 2008 11:00 PM

this was on MTV on the weekend, it was such a lovely sad song, that I had to find it...it is by Christina Aguilera...who has a great voice...in my humble opinion...enjoy...jewels

HURT

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today

I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I want to call you but I know you won't be there

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you
Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit
Sometimes I just want to hide 'cause it's you I miss
You know it's so hard to say goodbye when it comes to this

Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help me understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To have just one more chance
To look into your eyes and see you looking back

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself
If I had just one more day, I would tell you how much that
I've missed you since you've been away

Oh, it's dangerous
It's so out of line to try to turn back time

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself

By hurting you

Even though it is my daughter who is a fan of The Veronicas - it is their song Revenge is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were) that I feel I identify with the most in regards to my last breakup. Breaking up was the best thing we ever did!

Posted by: vef71 at July 31, 2008 7:33 PM

"Black" is a big one for me too. Love the emotion, desperation and power Eddie puts into the lyrics.

"Tonic - If You Could Only" is possibly one for having to do the break yourself and moving on. Mind you, when I listen to it I feel like I'm more on the receiving end than the protagonist.

Posted by: kw75 at July 31, 2008 7:26 PM

The best break up songs for me (depending which direction you are going) are:

The Kind of Love You Never Recover From
© 1990 Christine Lavin

I know a couple
She sits in a rocking chair working puzzles
He watches TV upstairs
She has a secret she has never let out
A man she thinks he never knew about.
She hasn't seen him in 30 years
The mention of his name doesn't brings on tears
If you ask her "Are there any regrets?"
She'll tell you "No"
But she never forgets.

It was The Kind of Love You Never Recover From
Even though she found another one to take his place
She never will escape the truth
At times like this
When the moon is bright
When the air is foggy like it is tonight
She'll think about what might have been
If she had just held on to him.

I know a man who has done it all
He sailed the oceans
Climbed the mountains of Nepal
He lives high up on the Avenue
With a beautiful wife
Lovely children too.
But there's a woman he still dreams about
Certian thing's he's learned to live without
If you ask him "Are there any regrets?"
He'll tell you "No"
But he never forgets.

It was The Kind of Love You Never Recover From
Even though he found another one to take her place
He never will escape the truth
At times like this
When the moon is bright
When the air is foggy like it is tonight
He'll think about what might have been
If had not let her
Slip away from him.

I read about a woman who said
She never regretted
Anything she's ever done
Such arrogant words always seem to be spoken by those
Who then die young.

So here am I
Looking at you
Oh tell me
What are we gonna do?
Am I destined to be your regret
Are you that one I will never forget?
Years from now will we curse the day
You let me let you walk away
Isn't this too dear a price to pay
For the freedom
Of going seperate ways?

Sometimes the songs you love to listen to when you are in a relationship...or what you think of as "your" song...end up being the ultimate breakup songs.

Posted by: istj54 at July 31, 2008 5:31 PM

Wnw - that was an odd piece of censorship. I wonder why it was deleted?

woodnwine on What's your ultimate breakup song?:
Try you? But who on earth are you and how can anyone try you?...
in reply to moneyandsex's "try me"

On a more light-hearted note, here's a 'break-up' song that I like... :)

My friend's got a girlfriend
Man he hates that beatch
He tells me every day
He says "man I really gotta lose my chick
In the worst kind of way"

She sits on her @ss
He works his hands to the bone
To give her money every payday
But she wants more dinero just to stay at home
Well my friend
You gotta say:

I won't pay, I won't pay ya, no way
(now now) Why don't you get a job
Say no way, say no way ya, no way
(now now) Why don't you get a job

I agree with laughsandtalks Max Merrit and Metors "Slipping Away". I was only 15 the first time i heard it and over many years I have played this song when i thought my lover was leaving / slipping away. She is now gone.

My favorite break up song is Ben Fold's "Song for the Dumped".

give me my money back,
give me my money back... bitch!
and don't forget to give me back my black t-shirt!

:)

Only had one relationship last for more than 2 years(I'm 21), which ended recently. I cleaned the dust off my guitar and played "Under the Bridge" by the Chilli Peppers,
the lyrics from 'White Noise' by the Living end summed up the last few weeks of the relationship
I also think "Heard it through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye is good,
Other than that when going through a break-up I'd play something upbeat to take my mind off it :)

Posted by: thatsmrright2u at July 29, 2008 9:07 AM

My ultimate break up song was "I will survive" which I played loud and long. The other was "You don't bring me flowers anymore",which made me cry even more. The amazing part was I did survive quite a few break ups over the years.Sometimes a song can convey exactly how we are feeling and confirm that other people have felt exactly how we are feeling.

Posted by: aries8 at July 29, 2008 6:09 AM

My favourite break-up song is:
Walkin Shoes by Tanya Tucker.
You'll love it girls...

Damn! If you sat here and read all these songs let alone listened to em you would really start feeling sad! Well I know I would. So many good ones but my ultimate breakup song is James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover.

The lyrics and the piano just strike me down everytime. Anyone else agree?

A long time friend said to me once, ....the less you expected someone, then suddenly someone come to your life unexpectedly , and you feel less lonely and out of the blues....

Destiny always plays ours lives...it has been written already, and we walks the paths itself.

Sometimes we think our lives unlucky enough but out of knowing of others people's lives is far more miserable than us....

If we hear the real life stories of people's lives for sure the comparison is far beyond our thoughts and makes the difference to us...as we says, we far more Lucky than them...it's a blessing grace !....this is only, we have had....today......than anyone's been through....

How about "I can't make you love me," especially the George Michael version - get out the Kleenex!!

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize
Don't patronize me

'Cause I can't make you love me If you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark in these final hours
I will lay down my heart, and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
And I can't make you love me
If you don't

I'll close my eyes and then I won't see
The love you do not feel, when you're holding me
Morning will come, and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then, to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

And I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
And here in the dark in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no, you won't
And I can't make you love me
If you don't

Ain't no use in you trying
It's no good for me baby without love
All my tears, all these years, everything I believed in
Baby
Oh yeah
Someone's gonna love me

I knew someone would have to put it up........for the uninitiated....."I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody elses sky but why, why, why, can't it, can't it be mine".................Bush "Glycerine" is a bit melancholy......... if you feel like indulging that.......

Posted by: spanky668 at July 28, 2008 8:47 PM

There is a song by Aqualung called "Brighter than Sunshine", not a breakup love song but a love song nevertheless, easy to listen to and pretty good too.
No vulnerability about that one.
It's on the soundtrack of a fillum called "A Lot Like Love"...............K

I agree jayjay...."Last Goodbye" is one of the best!

Posted by: brilliantblue at July 28, 2008 4:31 PM

Well I would have to say - Jeff Buckleys Last goodbye is very emotional.

Learning the Game

Hearts that are broken and love that's untrue
These go with learning the game
When you love her but she doesn't love you
You're only learning the game

When she says that you're the only one she'll ever love
Then you find that you are not the one she's thinking of

Feeling so sad cause you're always alone
That's when you're learning the game
Feeling so sad cause you're all alone and blue
you're only learning the game

When she says that you're the only one she'll ever love
Then you find that you are not the one she's dreaming of

Hearts that are broken and love that's untrue
You're only learning the game
When you love her but she doesn't love you
That's when you're learning the game

When she says that you're the only one she'll ever love
Then you find that you are not the one she's dreaming of

Feeling so sad cause you're all alone and blue
You're only learning the game
When you love her but she doesn't love you
That's when you're learning the game

For me.. Jeff Buckleys version of Hallelujah. A haunting sound that explores lifes ups and downs...

Posted by: itsamatteroftrust at July 28, 2008 10:38 AM

Somos Novios (It's Impossible) sung by Andrea Bocelli and Christina Aguilera

It summises the relationship and the split very well.

Posted by: virtuoso81 at July 28, 2008 10:10 AM

James Blunt's song "Your Beautiful" had just been released when I went through one of the worst breakups I think I've ever been through... Never has a song made me cry like that before!

Posted by: newtomelbs77 at July 28, 2008 1:16 AM

They reckon that the music you listened to when you had your first taste of real romance imprints.
I have very strong memories of all things Max Merrit's 'Slippin Away' which hit in late 1975.
Vulva ability eh Kaz?
Yeah, Freud has been pretty well discredited but I sorta get what you are saying. Been a while has it? I am a big fan of Jeff's old man Tim Buckley - HongKong Bar from Greetings from LA is a fantastic break up song and his Pleasant Street does it for me too.
Cheers Marquis

Tracey Chapman - Goodbye

For you
It's all in a day
One day in a life
It's all in the one word
The one word is goodbye
For me
It's all in what you say
Though you've tried to be kind
It's all in the words
From the lips that once touched mine with a sigh
Goodbye
For you
It's all in your face
The laugh and worry lines
It's all in the one word
You hope will make you young again
Goodbye
It's all in the play
Someone speaks the line
It's all in the one word
That stops and steals the time
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
For me
It's all in a day
It's the part in life
When it's all in the words
To fate and circumstance resigned
Goodbye

Sometimes when I'm really interested in someone I find out something they were musically involved in or an artist they really enjoy and buy a CD by that artist. It's a bit weird but in some ways it's a way of somehow making a vague sort of link with that person and saying goodbye. Only drawback of this approach is that sometimes your reluctant to play that CD because it triggers memories of that person.

Posted by: bondy78 at July 27, 2008 10:51 PM

I have had three major breakups in my time and they were hard to get over but given time the interest in that special person diminished. For me "Everybody Hurts" by REM is a song I enjoy playing because it is well crafted and often reflects how I fee after a break-up.

Posted by: bondy78 at July 27, 2008 10:47 PM

James Blunt's song - about breaking up and never seeing them again....just can't think of its name right now.....

Posted by: theactgirlnextdoor at July 27, 2008 9:32 PM

"Go Your Own Way" tops the list. The drumming is angry, the lead break clean and all wrapped in the lyrics that are pure raw emotion. How can you top a line like "how I can ever change things that I feel"? This song ranks as one of the best of all time. The whole Rumors album is one break up song...the pain ...the pain. I cannot hear this song and not feel bad.

MIKA - (no?) happy ending

I sang it a lot when i was dumped! Now I sing and am glad i am free!

This is the way you left me.
I'm not pretending.
No hope, no love, no glory,
No happy ending.
This is the way that we love,
Like its forever.
Then live the rest of our life,
But not together.

Wake up in the morning,
Stumble on my life.
Can't get no love without sacrifice.
If anything should happen,
I guess I wish you well.
Mm A little bit of heaven,
With a little bit of hell.

This is the hardest story that I've ever told.

Posted by: hiddensparklegeek at July 26, 2008 7:07 PM

For me, Bon Jovi's "It's My Life". It was released about the same time I left a very bad relationship and the words really just spoke to me:

It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

Yeah, Bon Jovi rocks.

" Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" by U2, a different kind of love song, written by Bono for his dying father.

" We fight, you and l,
All the time, its alright,
We're the same soul.
I don't need,
I don't need to hear you say,
That if we weren't so alike,
Youd like me a whole lot more."

Still sends shivers up my spine every time l hear it................K

If its amicable then Powderfinger's "Whatever makes You Happy"....
If they cheated then Alanis Morrisett's "You Oughta Know"...
If youve drifted apart then U2's "One"

Somebody New by Billy Ray Cyrus is the song to play them after they walk out.

"I hope you never find someone new" is just a few word from the chorus and it says a lot about what you feel.
