How to stay fit in the workplace?

From birthday cakes to afternoon teas to Friday drinks, the workplace seems to be designed to expand our waistbands. Add in the high number of hours we spend parked at our desks, and it is easy to see why we can steadily pack on the pounds over the years.
How is it possible to maintain your weight in light of company-sponsored temptations such as these? How do you avoid your coworkers' lolly dishes, their children's school chocolate and popcorn sales, and their freshly baked cookies and muffins without seeming to be unfriendly? How do you avoid the vending machines when the potato chips start calling your name at 3 o'clock in the afternoon? On the other side of the staying fit equation, how do you incorporate enough activity into your day to offset any extra calories that you are picking up?

My workplace recently adopted a Healthy Eating Policy. Now all the vending machines are full of muesli bars, vege chips, no-fat sorbitol filled chewing gum and other convenience 'health foods' - some seem to have a lot of palm oil and sugar in them...
In times of severe stress one of the team usually me, (only me if it is raining!) walks 450m to the local newsagent to buy chocolate and other stress busters (red frogs) for the team. Strange to say the walk clears my head, I tend not to eat the junk bought, have a big drink of water and skip back - not sure it is what the policy intended but it is working for me lol!
Sadly my staff aren't getting the exercise benefit of 900m in the middle of the day but they are enjoying the chocolate!
The vending machine gets filled once every 3 weeks, it used to be once a week so we are saving money too as the papershop is cheaper!

My line of work takes me interstate, overseas and locally.
I work from a building where 500 other people work and it is always someones birthday, farewell, retirement, dismissal, birth, death, marriage, divorce, new car, dog etc.
I don't avod the lolly jar and always have a stack in my draw to leave on the desk of good apples to return to when they have been away on sick leave etx.
Chocolates are fine and good for you if you have a cold so I leave them on the desks of the unwell that sit next to me so I do not get thier current illness.
Popcorn is always in the draws for when I am having a brain drain day and low in all the bad stuff but good for me to feel good about the long day still ahead of me.
Muffins and cakes are a must on the way to work for all the good apples celebrating something worth while in me sharing with them.
Vending Machines are not to be visited if you are organised and use a diray you will save money and time by purchasing them on the way home from work the day before.
Take the stairs instead of the smelly and wonky life and know that you are aware of all your fire exits and OHS standards at the same time.
Get up off your chair to get your collegues instead of sending an email. This can also take the heat out of a situation that is better handled face to face. Always say it with love and it will come back to you ten fold.
Peace out xxxxxxx indulge when you need to and avoid when you can xxxxxxxxeat well, love well and live long xxxxxxxxx

Ok, before I start with my 2 cents worth I have worked in the fitness industry for over 10 years as a personal trainer/manager and have been asked this question many times. The short answer is "to change something you need to change something!" Ask yourself this question: are you happy with how you look? if the answer is no..what are you prepared to do or sacrifise to get what you want! Do not do what everyone else has done and cut back on the amount of food you eat on a daily bases, it will get you in worse shape if you start eating 1 or 2 meals per day...will-power, commitment and exercise are the main ingredients you will need - will-power to stop yourself from those temptations; commitment to your ultimate goal and start moving your butt to increase your heart rate to burn those excess calories!

My last few years of working in retail frequently used to offer up lots of bad food options. Each time we did Stocktake the boss brought in Kentucky Fried & Pizzas to bolster us up as we counted into the night. In the Soft Furnishings department.. we were a pretty agile bunch lifting and rolling big bolts of fabric so some kept looking for energy boosts & had a lunch box under the counter with lollies and chocolates. By general agreement we decided tp put in something healthier, dried fruit and nuts .It worked for most of us .. that and always opting to use the stairs not the lift as well as several of us walking to work instead of driving. Walking into work in Hobart was the easy part .. as it was all down hill .. so the big challenge was walking home at days end. :-)

Seems no one has any ideas about fitness .... maybe plastic surgery is the (easier option) way to go.

Just get off your backside and walk around as much as possible, I guess.

I hope you and your family enjoyed your night at the footy.
Shame it was such a disappointing result.
It wasnt on TV here, as there was a direct clash with the Crows game, so I relied on Internet radio, but spent most of my time watching the Crows game.
I suppose all teams have to have their bad times, and its better for them to come quickly and go quickly, hoping the Eagles will turn the corner soon.

Really it's best not to go to work at all sometimes:))
Posted by: istj54 at June 21, 2008 11:31 AM
Tomorrow night it's treats all round for about 30 kids who normally have nothing. A night at the footie wouldnt be real without all the food that goes with it, not to mention the coke and the ice cream. We also have lollies and chocolate for in between and we all join in and have a ball. Unfortunately, I have put on weight and I am walking so far every day and becoming very fit, but the weight is not moving quickly. Anyway, when people tell you it is harder to lose as you get older, it's true, I can vouch for that !

Thanks for your answer.
"What are you searching for" would be an excellent topic to have a part 2 of.
That might be evidenced by the fact it reached its quota within a week, with many earlier topics battling to get a post.
This topic might get to 50 posts within 6 weeks if you close all the others down.

Great willpower waterlily!
Posted by: creativestuart at June 17, 2008 7:49 PM
No willpower really - you should see me with a baked cheesecake! It's mine, mine, all mine!!!
I think the trick comes from working with food all day - how much hollandaise asparagus or clotted cream and jam can one take?

In my late 30s - late 40s I worked in a 3-storey business. My desk was on the middle floor, my resources below and lunch room above. At our 3 breaks, I'd leave my desk early, run fast down to check stuff, then run as fast as I could straight up 2 floors for my cuppa, and 5 or 35 mins later, run back down one floor, sliding one hand along the banister in case I tripped.
My next business was my own, all on one floor, and my fitness immediately went off noticeably.

yaahmulegiddyup at 3:38 PM: Was that renewable energy source used for both times you posted?
My favourite renewable energy source is New York baked cheesecake. At a date you can share one slice, which makes you both look virtuously abstemious, and still lets you gutz a bit, provided you don't waste one crumb.
But at work you have to bring a whole cake, and that's tempting a whole heap of people.

Do what I did
become a hard core bodybuilder and people soon catch on that you do not "indulge" so as such they do not try to tempt you

Thanks for that Karina.
Somewhere around 350 comments (but really amount of text) the page load time seems to go right up I agree.
The FINDING MR RIGHT topic has got plenty of legs and will go to a few hundred. You could do the 2 or 3 part experiment on us with that in a couple of days I would say.
Cheers Marcus

Hi Virgil and Marcus,
I close topics that are too big because the page gets too heavy to load. So from now on let me know when you want to open a part 2 of the same topic so I can do that.
Typically I don't let blogs go over 350 comments as it gets too heavy so if you want part 2 let me know before it reaches 300 comments. Also, I like introducing new topics so it doesn't get boring.
Cheers,
Karina

Nope, we still get those chocolate fundraisers at our work, sometimes donuts too. At easter, hot cross buns. And I buy them as they are always for someone's child... and I used to be one of those mums who took the stuff into work!!! have a lovely evening all... jewels
Posted by: junebaby57 at June 17, 2008 9:13 PM
Hi Willow, I think a lot of the schools have stopped the chocolate fund raisers. I remember the last one my daughter was involved with was toothbrushes, would you believe. You could buy a coloured toothbrush for charity. I know we always have heaps in the office but normally we give them away to the little kids trailing in and out all the day. Mind you, that is after checking it with the mum first.

I agree with Marcus' earlier post, particularly that there are many really good topics that get retired quickly. I can understand that topics that are really good ones quickly become very time consuming to open. What about retiring a good topic, as "part 1" and opening a new topic with the same name as "part 2"?

Great willpower waterlily!
I have a way over-developed sweet tooth!

I work with food (cakes, muffins, scones) all day, most days. It is quite easy to get sick of seeing it and smelling it. I tend to keep my meals at home light and healthy: ceasar salad, vegie soups, omlettes - but can't deny I still enjoy the odd choccie or cheesecake!
I'm on my feet and highly mobile most of the day. Like Malsie, I walk to work in fine weather and try to get my money's worth out of the lap pool whenever I get the chance.

As I work from home and spend way too long at a desk I have moved to a 5 acre property so that whenever I am not working I have an active job to do or one that needs doing to keep me active. The weight I gained from too long sitting still is gradually falling off.
It is also the best thing I ever did to make me happy and content. I have a lovely lifestyle.

What a brain dead topic Karina. You binned a couple that were still going quite well.
A lot of us are self employed and I for one get plenty of exercise (and satisfaction) with my manly hands on occupation.

It's the English in me, Virgil - some terminology just lingers (even after 24 years). I still say "yoghurt" like Benny Hill in his old song about Ernie, the milkman, and his "strawberry flavoured yoghurt" if anyone here is familiar with that old classic?!

I would think most of us accept that topics come from the USA, but surely you could make the small adjustments for Australia, replace candy with lolly, and cookies with biscuits and cakes.
Not sure of Malsies comment about the chips though?

My former work place always had a morning tea for workers' birthdays. It was always chocolate and donuts! When I started in the workplace, I added fruit platters. While this was appreciated at the time, I noticed it reverted back to the donuts when I left.
Taking the carrot sticks to work is a good thing for when you need a snack. I often wonder why, when schools are promoting healthy eating and fighting childhood obesity, they send out chocolates and sweets for fundraisers...
Posted by: willow29 at June 17, 2008 2:34 PM
I think this is a bit of a lame topic myself, but hopefully it may take off to somewhere more interesting, as most tend to eventually...
So just to make you happy, Karina -
Saying "no thanks" to anything offered at work in the cake line seems perfectly feasible to me, and no-one seems to take offence when that's what I've chosen to do. I'm friendly the rest of the time, so I don't think they judge my decision as being "unfriendly".
I park my car a 15-minute walk away from where I work, so thus incorporate 30 mins' exercise into my work day (and aim to go to the gym after work when I can; as I only work part-time, that's not too onerous, although sometimes it does seem it).
Resisting crisps (still can't call crisps "chips" after all these years...) at 3 o'clock - I either think of the extra work to be done at the gym to offset it which is enough to stop me, or give in and think "what the hell", and then not feel guilty about it. My aim is to have balance, I suppose, in the food area, as in all things if possible. It doesn't always work, but that's the aim.

The best way to control your weight is to not eat.
The best way to not eat is to break up your relationships every month.
I guarantee you will not only lose weight but you wiill also lose sleep
